I was putting the leftover vegetable cuttings into the compost bin when I heard a rustle under the wood pile. I thought perhaps it was a lizard, trying to escape the heat (98 degrees in the shade today) or maybe even a snake (we have black racers, garters, and probably others). But when I looked closer, I saw the distinct pattern of a shell!! Now for those of you who are into dream work, I had a dream last night that I had accepted a few gopher tortoises into my yard because their home was being demolished to make way for development. And so I go outside and one is in my yard!!! What kind of sign is this? Anyway I have tried to make my yard hospitable to all wildlife, and I put out some romaine lettuce, carrots, and even some tomatos for my new visitor. Who knows if "he" will stay. I did make a shallow hole so "he" could escape the heat. Why am I saying "he"? Well there is a concave depression on the underside of this tortoise's carapace, and without being too graphic, that is almost certainly the characteristic sign of a male (so his carapace will "fit" on his mate's when they are making more tortoises).

Anyway - do you know Ted Andrews' book ANIMAL-SPEAK? Check it out when you have time. Turtle energy speaks of money, self-protection/ carrying your home with you, etc. If you've been chosen by turtles to be their home-ground steward, that's a big honor. Something to be dreamed-on some more.
I would much prefer to see a turtle than a snake
