I've always had some interest in photography, but up until a few years ago (and the invention of digital cameras) I never took it up as a hobby. Since taking it up and starting to post images here on Gather and other web sites, I have noticed a change in me. Suddenly I'm starting to take more note of my surroundings. Things that I used to pass by without a second glance, now get noticed and appreciated. I find myself looking at the clouds and skies more often. Sunrises and sunsets are not ordinary anymore. Flowers now seem to have much more color and beauty than they used to. Everyday birds, animals and wildlife of all sorts now are scrutinized by me. Often times I'm thinking to myself how I would take that shot, or how good that would look in a photo, sometimes berating myself for not having my camera with me! I sometimes will mention things to friends or coworkers who don't seem to know what I'm talking about. Conversations a lot of times go like this. Me: "Did you see that beautiful sunrise on the way to work this morning??" Reply: "Huh? The sun's up?" or "How about those great looking horses in that pasture we just passed by?" Reply "I didn't see them." I'm sure it used to be that same way with me too. I think my appreciation for nature as a whole has greatly increased since I started this hobby. One downfall.. trips now can take longer due to the number of stops to take pictures along the way. My daily walks are now accompanied by my camera, oftentimes also meaning more stops and not as much exercise. I try to justify it by saying carrying the weight of the camera makes up the difference. LOL I'm curious how many others of you involved in this hobby have discovered the same thing? I'll bet many if not all of you have! I look forward to hearing your comments! C):-)

I too am always with a camera by my side and it wasn't untill digital I bothered with nature photos - photos cost money so you needed family faces in them.
I am seeing (in capital letters) SEEING things again. When I was an art student and studying photography I had the eye but over the years it has dulled.
I now see colors, shapes, shadow and light play on everything. I take my camera to parties now (and will take it this afternoon to a pool party) but not for snap shots of the people, but more of the things the people are holding, wearing, or shadows or shimmers.
Yes, I agree with you 100% and I know from what I've heard there are a lot of us here on Gather awakening to what has always been right in front of our face.
Super article and thanks for voicing that. There are a lot of AH-HA moments in our future thanks to digital and for me, Gather.
I definately notice more things and am looking for more beauty in the world around me and I'm finding it!!
Well said and I'm glad you put it into words.
I've been thinking about this myself!
Welcome!
Thank goodness your pics are good enough for both of us LOL!
This comment and rating of your older gather content was an idea Steve the Legend had on how to give a Christmas gift to our Gather connections. He posted an article with the suggestion of viewing content from before we were connected. You are the 17th connection I have done this with so far, Dan. I hope you have a very Merry "Cowboy" Christmas!
