The other day one doctor prescribed a new antihistamine for me. I filled it, it seemed to work well, and then I read all the 'contraindications'. I took it for a few weeks, but I realized it was making me dizzy in a really weird way, like I was going to pass out. Then I checked what the price would be without my insurance partial payment in January when I start my deductible again. $138 a month. I decided not to mess with it, and went back to taking claritin. $1 a day for that pill seems well worth it, and I didn't experience any unwanted side effects.

I mentioned my concern to the nurse practitioner who practices with my internist. When I told her I wondered about the side effect warning about jaundice symptoms, she said, "Oh, they all say that. I never worry about it." THAT was NOT reassuring.

It is scary and even if we are trying to be careful, the doctors and the pharmacists don't know everything because so many of these drugs are released and then after millions of people start having side effects, the FDA wants a new label. Doesn't help those who may have gotten a blood clot or whatever.

I don't know whether we have that drug here in the UK, but I'll check. I have recently been on 2 different types of antibiotics, I specifically asked the doctor at the time, "do they mix with all the other medications that I have to take?" I was told yes. Now I am having to have all sorts of tests as they deem to have done something to the lining of my stomach causing me terrific pain. Thanks for the information, its a great article.

I just looked it up in "The Pill Book" that I have here at the house. It interferes with the absorbtion of foods, but they tell you to take it with food. Considering the fact that patients who have had a kidney transplant take the drug to help rejection, you would think they could come up with a drug that couldn't interfere with the absorbtion if you eat. Something all of us need to do to survive.

My doctor perscribed me a pill and told me it may have two or three side effects. When I read information on the website it had a whole bunch and turns out a lot of people have been adversely affected by it.

My father in law is a pharmacist at Walgreens (and has been for 30 years). I honestly ask him before I take any medications because as I have come to realize half the time the doctors do not check for medication interactions and don't know much about the medications themselves. I know that neither pharmacist nor doctors know everything about medications, but doctors go through less classes (in school) than pharmacist. I always look up my medications, to learn about them before taking them. It 's a good idea to do that. Thanks for the article.
