Tomorrow in Quaker City in Noble County starts the Ohio Hills Folk Festival. You should be able to find an amish quilt. We have Amish living in that area of our county.

The festival is over 100 years old. I think you will enjoy the atmosphere.

If you're near Paducah, it is worth a visit. Very fine small city with lots of culture.

We lived in Pa for 11 years and it was nice to meet the Amish and the Mennonites. They are interesting people.


I hope you find the quilt you want. My sister got the quilt that my Great aunt made that we got to use when we were sick. It had girls in bonnets on it. One of the things I did after my dad died was to go on ebay and I found one just like it. It isn't the same one, it is a different color but I still feel like I have a piece of my past!

I lived beside the ultra-conservative Amish Community in Branch County Michigan. It is my experience that the Amish recognize that they have to take care of their tractors and means of transportation -- draft horses and buggy horses. But just like us "English" some take better care of these than we do. The buggy horses are frequently thoroughbreds who have outlived their usefulness as race horses or trotters.

If you are interested in genuine Amish quilts, would recommend you drive up to Southern Branch County Michigan and go to the area between Kinderhook and the Indiana state line. Around the area around California Township. Stop at any Amish farm and ask where you can buy quilts, they will direct you to someone that has them for sale. Beware these people are conservative Amish, they ride in open buckboards not the fancy buggies you see, there houses are not the neat tidy white farmhouses you associate with the fancy Amish, their kids are barefoot and may not look especially clean, and they have an aroma you would not want to be next to in a closed car in hot weather -- but they are the genuine article and they will sell you real Amish quilts.

I was around them in Kansas for a while when I was there helping my grandmother. Those are some strange people. I know it was nothing to see horses that looked to be starving, used to pull the carts by some of these people, then others that looked completely healthy doing the same work. So it is likely just the different people, but you would think they would police their own communities.

I guess there are good and bad in all groups. My husband is phobic about people caring for animals. when we go somewhere with our dog, he'll bring lots of water for the dog. I'll ask if there is a bottle for me. No, I gave it all to the dog. No kidding.

I know a couple of people like that. My friend swears he only bought this house to have a place for my dog and cats to stay...LOL, I get to stay to take care of them. Have fun in the Ohio Valley if you get here. I am in the Louisville Ky/Southern IN area!

I use to sell at the flea market in Hartville, Oh. (I live a little further North). There were tons of Amish and Mennonites that came their and sold all their wares and shopped. They were nice people.

The ones who angered me were English (non-Amish) that would bring their dogs on very hot days. The flea market was on asphalt and the dogs, who were very close to the ground, would be panting their little brains out.

We always had a bowl and a thermos with cold water for them. We got to be known as a watering station and did a great business, met nice folks and sweet dogs.

From my experience in Lancaster PA, the Amish take excellent care of their animals. They alway shave the most beautiful, well groomed horses you will ever see. I don't know what you saw, but it is the direct opposite of my experiences.

We were in Lancaster not too long ago!

Thankfully, all the horses seem in good shape and cared for. We even saw signs on the lawn of houses on the long stretches of road which said "Water for Horses Here"!
Hopefully, they all take advantage of that!

I grew up in Amish country. You noticed the care they take of their animals but I have one thought for you, how do you think they take of their women? They have very hard lives and are very second class. Sometimes, the horses have it easy.

I hope you find just the quilt you are looking for Carol. Have several myself, not amish though, just beautiful quilts I use for the summer.
