I would say india also. With the long English occupation and their emerging economy if only 50% spoke English that would be 500 million. I don't think it's china because a friend of mine just came back and said few ordinary people there seemed to understand him.

The US has about 285 million English speaking citizens. Any country that wants to beat that has to have a population greater than that. That leaves China, India, Russia, and ?

In Europe they call our language American and English is spoken in England...thats were I got Great Britain...just guessing... :)

Britain, Ireland, France, Japan, India - though, in most countries English is the language of the wealthy and educated.

English is the new 'French' - it's the lanque d'riqeur for the civilised and educated societies. (I would still rebel and speak in Gael though - and, have done so to deliberately confuse those to whom English is their native tongue!]

I think it is the Indian subcontinent, ie India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (as they became after partition and when Bangladesh became separate from Pakistan)
