OK... I'm officially disappointed in the comments

July 28, 2009 06:35 PM EDT (Updated: July 28, 2009 10:11 PM EDT)

I decided I was gonna get some points and cash out, so I wrote some killer articles on controversial subjects (I believed everything I said... truly I did - no fake arguments from me, folks), and garnered bunches of comments and bunches of points.  With a little encouragement, I was ticking along at about 150 a day toward the end.

Now, using a site like this for income would be a remarkably silly thing to do.  The BEST I could do was 150 a day for about four days.  But you have to look at my entire experience here.  It took me SIX MONTHS to earn $100.00. I MIGHT, if I REALLY WORKED at it, make a hundred bucks a month for a month or two.  But I don't have any intention of working THAT hard!

So, I cashed out, and decided to go back to having fun.  I wrote a spooky little piece that would've gotten me 30 or 40 comments a couple months ago.  So far I have about a dozen, and I likely won't get more.  I did a funny piece on a spam love-note I got... 15 comments.  I did a piece on giant coal pushin' machines, and got 9 comments.  Used to be, I'd get about two views per comment.  Now I'm seeing as much as a ten to one difference.

I enjoy getting comments, bantering with folks and knowing I've entertained 'em.  But this silent view-and-run business is downright disappointing.

I'll try a couple of Old Man and Me stories, and see how that goes, but I'll bet I'll never see 40 comments again.

Come read Whut th...?

You get more comments than I do :) I wouldn't try to use any site like this to actually earn a living, there's only so many hours in a day LOL
Kerrell g. Aug 18, 2009, 11:25pm EDT
I agree, Franklin. At the same time, Young Chas does bring up some very intersting points and to that end, I will give him a 10.

maybe if you choose a nonsensical path such as a board game with farm animals in ballet wear and a moody horse who's tired of being the one who has to spin the Twister nedle all the time and wants to play in Olive Oil with the dominatrixes and the goat~well maybe then the comments would hump up~

Articles complaining about not getting points usually get some comments. We'll see who wanders in ....
Netty B. Jul 28, 2009, 6:53pm EDT
yes they do
Chuck L. Jul 28, 2009, 7:01pm EDT
Not really lookin' for points so much as conversation now. I can always do posts that'll get me 200 to 250 comments, but that's not the issue here. i've been trying to entertain folks, and I'm gettin' dam-all feedback.
Chuck L. Jul 28, 2009, 7:50pm EDT
Looks as thugh you're right, Peter.

I have noticed on most posts by everyone the views always out do the comments and ratings. I call it the American hit and run society. Americans are notorious for taking something and running out the door. Can't expect Americans to waste a nano second to rate a post.

Well since Gather changed the way things work there is pretty much no value to commenting or rating so folks arent doing it. Don't take it personally, its not you.
Chuck L. Jul 28, 2009, 7:02pm EDT
Yeah, I know why it's happening. It's just disappointing. Like standing in front of an audience, telling jokes and getting no laughter because everybody's reading.

Okay, I can officially say here's my two cents, cuz realistically, that's about all my comment's worth.:) I wish it were more. I read your stuff, and I comment a little, I know you still get points for views, so I thought I'd let you know on this piece, since you brought it up and all. lol But I do read your stuff!

Hi Chuck. I live in Jamaica, so all these points earned are useless to me. Gather should allow us to trade them with you members in the U.S.

It has been lots of fun and very educational for me here on Gather. Also my English vocabulary has been boosted. (I might post on it one day) For exampl;e, learned the meaning of "World View" in a very heated debate, corrected my misunderstanding of the word "hubris" (used it a lot in another heated debate).
Matthew M. Jul 28, 2009, 7:13pm EDT
Dennis, just let your points build up. Gather is supposed to, at some point, allow other countries to cash out. I don't know why they have not done it yet but there's probably a good reason.

If you posted more through Gather Broadcasting, I would come comment in a heartbeat.
That's the only mail or posts that I read these days.
Because of my bursts of writing creativity and house work these days, I don't have much time to comment like I used to.
Anytime you want me to read a post of yours just come by my profile and send me a link.
Chuck L. Jul 28, 2009, 7:05pm EDT
OK - I might do that.

By th' way, I post everything I write through GB. And I e-mail through that too.
Angela A. Jul 28, 2009, 8:08pm EDT
I didn't know till now that you posted to my group, so..
Thanks for posting to my group, Anythingwriting

If you don't post to GB, then you post to my lovely group as well.
That's awesome!

I find that there are fewer comments in comparison to the number of views.
As people we thrive on appreciation. In a site like this, comments show appreciation - someone read what we wrote, thought about it and reacted. That, more than the points, is where "it's at". It's the whole point of this type of site - INTERACTION!

Yep. The only way to get lots of comments it to bicker. And even then you're not getting a ton of unique page views, just having the same people come back and fight some more.
Chuck L. Jul 28, 2009, 7:06pm EDT
Indeed.
Marilyn M. Jul 28, 2009, 7:06pm EDT
I used to get 2 $25 PayPal deposits per month, but lots of the points were from viewing and commenting. Now, of course, one doesn't get much out of that. I still view and comment, but I don't spend hours doing it. And I have taken to "marketing" some of the things I write here just to help boost views. But you never know what will interest people - today. I posted something a few days back that has gotten 31 views and only 3 comments.
Matthew M. Jul 28, 2009, 7:11pm EDT
I have reduced my current goals from $50 a month to $25 every two months. That update really hit me.
Dennis Gilman Jul 28, 2009, 7:13pm EDT
Yes Chuck bickering works. I see Marilyn's comments a lot on posts that amount to the authors bickering, griping or just blowing off steam.

I think Gather needs to make another update. only this time they would adjust the points so that conversation is encouraged. Problem is people will start leaving tons of short spammy comments. Tough to set all the formulas right...

I use Paypal to cash out and a lot of my points came from comments and postings to my groups. Now that the points have been restructured, it's going to take everyone longer to cash out.

I am completely in the dark about the value of points. I noticed that they started showing up, but I haven't a clue how I 'earned' them. Nor do I know what to do with them. Somehow it seems related to how often I run my mouth on this forum. Speaking of which, what's with the food forums, like The Splendid Table? Do you have to be a professional food writer to post there. I posted, and then realized that there were very few posts actually on that group, compared to the numbers of people who are 'members'. I guess I just don't get this gather.com place. Does anyone have any suggestions about groups I might enjoy. I like conversation too, and am interested in a wide variety of topics.

You need some buzzwords, Chuck. Here try these:

Un-American
Domestic Terrorists
Republicans
Blue Dogs
Hate
Health Care Reform
Die
Scum
Palin
Blows
Cheney
Jesus Christ
WTF

Just throw those around and BAM! Comments, baby, comments.
Lori F. Jul 28, 2009, 7:49pm EDT
To add to EM.

Anything with Obama and "natural born citizen" is good especially if you can incorporate both Palin and Jesus and abortion all in the title.

After that it doesnt matter what the body of your article is...I have found most people dont read them anyway just the titles.
EM JAY (Gather Director of Chaos & Uprisings) W. Jul 28, 2009, 8:21pm EDT
How could I forget abortion? There are so many that wish my mother would have taken the time.

as an irish pollock; here's my take on the situation.

chuck i usually read what you post. i usually agree with what you write. i usually don't comment. i guess i "pick my battles". there are days where i would love to debate an issue until the cows come home. there are many more days where i just want to read what others are thinking & maybe get into some light banter about stupid stuff. i am here for the socializing; not for the points. (trust me in my 6 weeks being here, i am not racking up points!!)

i appreciate that you wanted to hit the lighter side of gather. maybe those who battle with you on issues that you bring to the table; prefer you in that light. maybe they don't want to respond to your "other" side. then again; it's summer & there are many hit & run people on this site now.

what do i know. i'm just an irish pollock. sorry for rambling about nothing!! :)
Chuck L. Jul 28, 2009, 9:55pm EDT
OK, then... your presence is welcome. BTW - a pollock is either an artist named Jackson, or a fish. Are you perchance a Polack?
Michelle S. Jul 28, 2009, 11:42pm EDT

I view more than I comment. However, will comment when a comment is needed. There seems to be a lot of comment on this post. However, it is to my understanding that it's the views that get you the points not the comments. Otherwise, I think people would be commenting more. Of course I don't really know the rules to gather anymore. I just do what I can to help, and post stuff of my own. If people don't want to view it or comment, oh well, we all know who our real friends are. I figure I give views and comments to a load of people who never bother ever looking at my things. That is the way of life...

Well I'm here reading and commenting. Don't know if that's worth anything to your or me. I got a couple home depot cards out of this site when I was a newbie. Spent lots of hours here reading, commenting, and posting a few things. Got tired of the cliqueyness (is that a word?) and ganging up by all the sycophants. Still read some stuff but rarely comment.

54 comments on the benefit of having comments, but they do not make enough money to make it worth your time or do they?
I have 3500 points setting on my page and have done nothing with it...I think I have been here for years but not everyday or even every months...you may get more by commenting on your post like everyone seems to do.

I think you can write about what you like and forget about the points, maybe the secret of success.

hannah "mighty mouth" wallen (Site Shite Stirrer) Jul 28, 2009, 9:51pm EDT
I'm seeing a lot more views than comments, too... oddly, whether I "broadcast" my articles or not, I'm seeing a lot more views overall, which is a little confusing. I'm getting less comments than I used to, despite the spike in views. I guess that can be chalked up to people knowing that making comments won't get them - or person on whose article they're commenting - any points. It's disappointing, because on some stuff I really want to get the comments so I can see what people are thinking after reading what I've written. (The vexatious litigator articles are one example of that... the kitty LOLs I wrote are another.) I'm left to wonder if there are that many members here just for points, or if my stuff is so weird it's leaving people speechless. Maybe it's both. XD
Chuck L. Jul 28, 2009, 10:01pm EDT

Too late, LOL! I'm thirty-seven and two years away from my high school's twentieth year reunion. I think it's pretty well set that I'm going to be weird.

Well.... not to shabby with the comments to this point.
You are correct though; I will have 100 view and only 6 comments.
Really lame

It's summertime, and people are outside, away from their computers. Wait until fall and see what happens.

I used to view and comment a great deal more but since the point change I do not do as much. I was not in it for the points but I stand on the principle that Gather is more interested in getting new people to the site than they are in rewarding loyalty. I have always felt people should get points for commenting but they never have. Commenting provides valuable feedback and satisfaction for the author. Then the author is encouraged to post more. Now is seems Gather doesn't care if the author is happy as long as they bring in more views.

I have been saying all along I would rather get even a generic comment then nothing at all. Sure I don't want "nice job" when someone didn't read it. But sometimes the generic is the only thing to say. Especially in pictures. I think honestly cutting as far as they did on commenting has hurt gather. They want you to basically advertise for gather by advertising your articles. That is all fine and dandy but what when those people decide to join gather like I just recently realized a few did and no I didn't invite them thought I would of. They decided to join through my articles. Now that they are part of gather my understanding is their views are no longer unique enough to give points to them or me to amount for anything. Kind of disappointing seeing our advertisement is bringing them here.

I think most of us are seeing a decrease in comments as more people focus on generating content instead of viewing/discussing comments. I wonder if gather will change it's policy again.

It is a miracle I can comment, I have contacted Gather Guru's 4 times now I cannot post anything., use the gather email either. Yes I did all the things that worked before they are not working at all now. Gather techs have yet to contact me though have tickets asking for help since last week. I can email from a group and I can comment that is about it. They are NOT helping me. No. Anyone else having posting problems. Does not matter what browser I use either it is the same thing not able to post, not able to send emails..

It comes in waves, man. I've had times where I'm had massive comments on stuff and times where 2 or 3 people comment. I've been on Gather for 2-and-a-half years.

Chuck,

Many members have admitted to changing how they participate in the community. Typically this includes viewing content, but spending less time commenting unless they are really compelled to do so. Hence, on a positive note, while these members are primarily motivated by points, the comments that you do receive are then more valuable and reflective of the friendships you have developed in the community.

Also, almost all online communities suffer a slow-down over the summer months. That could be a contributing factor as well.

As I've said before. If writers don't get readers who comment, why write. I've had good luck so far, but I don't understand why Gather does not see the need for readers to get points too.

Its really unfortunate what this change has done to the site. I too enjoyed conversation, having people stop by to tell me how their day was or what they thought on my article topic. Since the change so many have adopted the "I'm not going to comment because I'm not rewarded" mentality. That's great, however, the less you comment, naturally the less comments you will get in return. I was upset for a few weeks, but then I made a lot of new friends here, who are not 'fair weather commenters" and that has helped. Give it some time, branch out a little, make new friends, and you'll be back up to those numbers in no time!

Points (or the lack thereof), summer (when people are – gasp – afk doing actual summer stuff), and for a while the flooding of Gather with AP content has reduced viewing and commenting significantly. It’s almost getting kind of lonely here.

Chuck, there's never any doubt that if you pick an argument to write about, it is a subject endeared to you and we, the readers - or at least the ones who know you, can bet our bottom dollar it will be nothing less than HONEST.

With that said, I think folks are a little tired of politics at the moment. No, that's NOT the right 'mindset' but it seems to be the prevailing 'mindset'. Hell, right now, it looks as though Obama cannot even keep Biden & Hillary from squabbling. On this issue I side with the Secretary of State. The VP just needs to shut up and go take over that 'undisclosed location' that Cheney inhabited all these years.

As for points? I've earned 8300 since April. That's seems pretty good to me.

Nice ranting with you.

I only do these little things to show others there might be things they don't know, and for the fun of it, and for something to keep me occupied.
Points???

It seems that I get 25 bucks every two or three months. That is enough for a cheap dinner out in the afternoon around 2 or 3pm, when it’s quiet in the restaurants.

I've noticed that too. Believe me, if I view something, I will read it and rate it. I'm like you, I want conversation. What will this world come to if everyone just read and didn't have conversation? It would be pretty lonely.

To me, it's not about points but rather getting information out to people and sharing different points of view. Gather is not the way to get rich, but you can get rich with friends and help lift the level of understanding of people with regard to the issues of our day.
M. Bradley McCauley McCauley Jul 30, 2009, 12:33pm EDT
I'm in total agreement with you too Carla but I spend less time on Gather now since the points are less but do come by at least twice a day--I enjoy reading the posts of various friends, like my buddy Chuck.

yes I agree Carla, it's not just about points.

If one desires points, one simply needs to give the impression that the post contains nudity or descriptions of sexual activity. that'll do it.
Robert - just a simple man - B. Jul 30, 2009, 11:37am EDT
OMG Somebody agrees with Carla.

actually just trying to add more comments to Chuck's tally.
