Most of us know that we should read to our children, but what are the real benefits, and does it really matter that much?
The answer to that would be yes!!!
I have personally researched the difference between children who have been read to and those that didn't have that priviledge. The results are astounding!
My husband, for instance, wasn't read to as a child. Well not that often anyway, and now he won't even pick up a book! Unless it's something about Guns he will have nothing to do with it.
My daughter has a friend whose parents do not read to her either, and she now has much more trouble in school than the other children who have parents who do read.
Reading promotes more growth in your child's brain besides just being able to recognize sounds and letters, it also teaches them listening skills, life skills, it makes math and all other areas of school easier for them, not to mention the amount of bonding time your child gets with you. It's a way to build good memories for your child as well.
Children who are read to when they are infants pick up reading so much faster as well as speech. They are also more confident in themselves.
It doesn't take much time to read to your child, even if you only read to them for fifteen minutes a day it's more beneficial than not at all!
There are some great suggestions for good wholesome books to read to your child here.
So tonight when you are tucking your child in bed grab a book, relax, and read for fifteen minutes! Count each time you do it a victory, you will eventually make it a habit!

He also wanted to write, and got very discouraged that his writing skills didn't match his reading skills. :) So, he would dictate letters and stories to his dad and to me. We'd type them up on the computer and print them so he could see if it was what he intended.
As a teen, his friends' mothers loved my son. He encouraged all of his friends to read - not just what they were required, but other books as well. He told them that you have to be a good reader to get along in this world.
