When the World was a lot larger than it now is, when communications took months to get to their destination, when transport within countries sometimes took weeks to arrive at its intended destnation; life was lived at a slower pace. What would our forefathers think of the new society, built as it is on technology so advanced that even we who belong to this age can't keep up with the rate of change.
One thing is constant, some people amassed wealth, and used the wealth to control other, perhaps less ambitious, people. Originally the strongest and most callous became the leaders. By strength of arms they dispossessed others and usurped their land. Later the richer class paid a pittance to their labourers, enough to keep them alive, but not enough for them ever to become a threat.
In this technological age, labour is no longer necessary. The manufacture of goods is becoming more and more automated, making labour in most jobs uneccessary. Indeed over production is becoming as big a problem as once was the lack of production. Economists need to rethink their theories; philosophers need to devise new societies, and politicians must learn to deal fairly with people who lose their jobs to automation.
The pursuit of money and possessions, the worship of wealth; these must change. All people must be provided with enough money to allow everyone to have a comfortable existence.
Alternatively we could cull the population to maintain the status quo. Two World Wars had some effect, but technology is now lengthening the life of the population, increasing the problems. Even an epidemic of Black Death proportions will not resolve this problem.
The rape of the planet's resources, the pollution of air, sea and land need to be adressed in a meaningful manner. Far from being a Goden Age, I truly think that this world is struggling; and I see very few men in positions of responsibility taking any action.
Hope fully they won't act too late, before life on Earth becomes unable to sustain life and becomes just another lifeless rock in an uncaring Universe.
