I haven't seen anything about this posted on Gather; I guess the folks on Gather aren't as much into the scientific news sphere as they are in other places. But I thought it was interesting.

From the article:

Scientists poring over their first close-up data from Mercury in almost33 years say they're delighted by some new discoveries and astonishedby the remarkably sharp view of the planet captured by NASA's Messengerspacecraft during its flyby earlier this week.

I get NASA updates in my email every few days. And yes, there are groups here on Gather that talk about astronomy topics. Just have to do a search for them. I put the MESSENGER website on my favorites. Thanks for posting this here, Peter.

I did see this on my computer news and on the TV, as old as I am , this stuff is probably more interesting to me as the technology to do all this evolved during the time I am alive, including the space exploration beginning, and of course way before that, so everything about space is exciting to me, as my brother was a design engineer with Werner Von Braum on the tracking computers on the first apollo landing on the moon, a part of history in my own family. Sadly right now at 76 he is in the last stages of altzheimers, but he would be thrilled by any of this news as am I.
