So last night tired of watching the Colts beat down the Ravens, I surfed the tube a bit and came across this documentary on 1968 on the History Channel.
All I have to say is Tom Brokaw hit the nail on the head when he said this was the year that changed the country. Two major leaders die at the hands of assassins, the war in vietnam, the student protests and the drug eppidemic. In ways 2008 looks to mirror 1968 in a few ways. A pivitol election a much protested war in an unwelcoming land.
The documenary hit on one key issue that involved the war in Vietnam versus the war in Iraq. That issue was T.V. coverage. In 1968 you couldn't escape images of Vietnam on your television and today there seems to be a media blackout of the war in Iraq. I belive the government dosent allow for media coverage as a way to avoid major protests like those of 1968.
There was one protest going on in 1968 other than the war and race protests that is very overshaddowed by the other two, but equally important. That was the protest for equality for women.
Without those brave people in 1968 protesting, clashing with police and national gaurdsmen, shedding their blood, and losing their lives. I wouldn't be able to hold such an important position in my company and I couldn't go to my favorite bar with my BFF Tanya, (who is african american).
So thank you, and I lookforward to 2008 hoping that we can do just as much good and change the world just enough so that in 2038 some chick can log onto whatever the net is then and just write an article that says thank you for changing the world!
but,
whothehell cares
