Kaleb Tierce, 25, is being investigated for allegedly distributing harmful material to a minor after the student selected Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Cormac McCarthy's "Child of God" off the list and read it.
As a parent, if you don't want to allow your child to read X, Y, or Z book, that is your business. But to try to have a teacher arrested over making a highly regarded novel that was approved for the reading list available is heinous. This book was on a reading list for pre-Advanced Placement Class. I.E. a class for exceptional students who SHOULD be more mature than the typical 9th grader and who should be able to handle more advanced material.

*facepalm*
I am speechless.
It really seems teachers should arm themselves with legal insurance! Thank God it's possible to do!
First, the Superintendent should be dismissed and the teacher brought back to work. The Superintendent had absolutely no right to put this teacher on leave, paid or unpaid.
Second, the parent should be told to shut up and parent. If they were concerned about the books their child was reading in an AP class, then they should have simply taken their kids out of the AP class, or guided their own child to select another book. They sound like ignorant hicks who probably encourage their children to read the bible, which has a lot worse stuff in it, but freak out over one novel that the student CHOSE to read off a list.
Honestly, sometimes I think sterilization is a good idea. This kind of ignorance and the fact that they actually have the balls to force their opinion on a public school should be nipped in the bud and not allowed to flourish through reproduction.
Dear Parents/Guardians
The curriculum your child will be exposed to this year includes literature. Literature is books written by people that have stories in them. Some of the stories have bad people in them who do bad things, and it is possible that your child will be sad, angry, or otherwise affected by what he or she reads. There is a further possibility of children reacting to these stories by thinking, asking questions, or discussing things.
If you want to come in and review the material your child will be reading, please make an appointment with his or her English teacher. You can also access the reading list online at the school's website.
Sign and return this form only if you DO NOT want your child to be reading literature books this year.
[ ] I do NOT give my child permission to read literature this year.

How old were Romeo and Juliet?
Not that I'd like my children to run off and get married at those ages, but the reality is that in the past people got married early and had children early. They couldn't afford to wait either, as they died early too....
A group of angry parents stormed the school and asked for his head because he'd made their kids read commie stuff. The irony is that the Soviet article was the one that used opinion in place of fact.
I'm curious about the girls who are making the accusations. Are their parents friends with the parent who started this fiasco? I'm done a lot of research into school censorship, and a common practice for such people is to "stack on" additional charges by forcing their children to make false accusations. Sometimes a small group will try to "prove" their case by drumming up other stuff.
If you are one of his students, I'm sure folks here would be interested on hearing your version of the story.
