I agree that we should appreciate what we have here in America more than we do. Looking at the living conditions in other countries, we should be happy with what we have in our possessions or the possibilities that we have. We have so much more than other places and should be grateful for the things we have been given. I agree that Canada is pretty well off as well.

The only place I have ever been that was prettier, and no I have never been to Canada, was Austalia. I wish the US would learn some from them in some areas. That does not mean I don't think we have it good here, we can just do better though.

It's in Americans' long-term interests to help all the other nations of the world reach the same standards as soon as possible. Otherwise it becomes an US against THEM mentality; maybe it already is. If it comes down to the US against the whole rest of the world, as things do seem to be heading, then boyoboy fasten your seat belts. All the border guards in the world won't help -- the Great Wall didn't work for China, and the Great Rio Grande Fence won't work for the US, either.

How true, Jim. We need to help our neighbors, but how do we get rid of the evil governments that terrorize these people. I had to bring a booty bag with me, so when the police robbed me, I had the money to pay them. They'd pont a machine gun in our faces, take our money, then welcome us. It's not the people; it's the government.,

I was in Guatemala, and several other central American countries. My husband was in Singapore. We both saw such filth. Just to flush a toilet was my biggest thrill when I hit Houston Airport. My brother who was always crabbing about America went to India and came home and kissed the ground at the airport. He still complains because people have short memories.

We need a new government filled with those who will get off their duffs and fix levee's, making them efficient, fix water mains, update sewage plants and electric grids, bring new innovative technology FOR the people, and actually bring us into the 21st century, rather than cater to their own special interests, lining their pockets to assure they get to keep the bounty when disaster strikes. Compared to third world countries, we still live in better conditions. Sparky makes a good point that shouldn't be ignored.

A lot of good points made here. But yes, we do have it better than a lot of countries. We need to be more appreciative of those things and work harder to see we don't lose them. Make sure upgrades are being made. Why is it we always wait until its broke, then put on a bandaid and cross our fingers, instead of just fixing the core problem???
Another thing I notice is our rooms and boxes and storage sheds full of 'things' - people other places may have what's on their backs and that's all. Why do we need so many things? (I need to weed out my 'things' big time.)

Not only did you break my bubble, but my pipes started leaking tears when I read this to them. I know things aren't perfect, and we need to be aware of our water systems, but overall, I'd rather be here than anywhere.

Yes, the U.S. definiately ahs a very good standard of living. I was in Jamaica last October and man, the poverty there is astounding. On the way to the horseride, we passed through open country and could see mansions as well as shanty towns. The later were much more prevalent!

It's easy to get conceited when you have an abundance or even just sufficient resources.
