Promoting Your Content on Gather
- Using Clickable Links in Emails and Comments -
I receive many emails from folks in Gather Town asking me to read their newest article, or sometimes seeking my feedback on an older article, poem or image. I want to pass along a little of my gathered wisdom about sending out emails to promote your articles on Gather.
First a little email Netiquette:
Everyone in Gather Town wants to attract as many readers as possible to their articles. There are some good tools to help you in your endeavours, gather-mail being one of them. To better reach your intended audience your email should contain the following items:
Always give every email (every email, even emails not promoting an article) a short descriptive title. People tend to open emails that interest them first, and an email title helps create interest in reading the email just as a good title draws people to your article. Additionally, an email without a title may appear suspicious to some recipients.
When sending emails, you should only enter addresses in the "TO:" box when you are sending the email to one person. If you are including a few other close connections that all know each other, you would put the additional addresses in the "CC:" Carbon Copy box.PLEASE NOTE: When sending to many recipients you should put your address in the To: and ALL OTHER addresses in the "Bcc:" Blind Carbon Copy box. This keeps the recipients from having to scroll through all your connections. Also, some of your connections may object to your spreading their email address around to everyone else. (this applies not only on Gather, but in real-life emailing also) Also, do not over use this promotional tool.
Include a short description or synopsis of the article to help create interest. People can be resistive to just reading any and every article that is sent to them in an email.
When promoting an article in an email, you should always include the article title along with the URL link so people can easily find your article. You can just copy and paste the URL but your email recipients will have to copy and paste the URL into their browser and hit enter and … well, you have asked them to perform several steps to get to your article … It is much better if you create a clickable link in your email for your prospective readers to click on and be taken directly to your article.
You can create a clickable link for emails or comments by using simple html code like the following:
The html code convention is:
<a href="[insert your article url address]"> [insert your article title] </a>
Note: you do not put the brackets - [ ] - in the code
I find that the gather-mail does not always handle the QUOTEMARKS - " - very well, so I eliminate them in emails and the gather email application inserts them during the send process.
Here is an example that links to one of my articles:
<a href="viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474976929595">Featured Group Articles</a>
When your recipient opens the email your link will display like this:
Clicking on the link will take the email reader directly to your article or image. This saves your prospective readers the hassle of cut & paste. Plus they are much more likely to click your link right then, while it is in front of them and fresh in their mind.
I hope this helps you create more interest in your articles by better utilizing email so as not to irritate your intended audience with mass emails but instead gently inform them of the availability of your article.
Author's Note: Remember to be selective in using this promotional tool. Not every article you publish on gather is worthy of a mass email to all your connections. Overuse (abuse) of this tool can cause people to avoid reading your emails and the articles you were hoping to promote. Many people tire quickly of being bombarded with emails.
P.S. I hope you will read my article that I snuck into the html code demonstration. That article promotes the authors whose articles are currently being Featured in the groups I host in Gather Town. ;-)

On the other hand...I goofed and posted my article into the wrong group by accident. I emailed the moderator/owner with what I hoped to be the most sincerest sounding apology. I was relieved when his only reply was, "Now worries..."
I had to put something in the example and I thought a plug for my article that PROMOTES the authors and their articles that are being featured on the group homepages of the groups I host was a reasonable advertisement ... ;-)
good to know that about the quotation marks in the html convention in gather email,
thank you.
I especially like your "Author's Note": Remember to be selective in using this promotional tool. Not every article you publish on gather is worthy of a mass email to all your connections. Overuse (abuse) of this tool can cause people to avoid reading your emails and the articles you were hoping to promote. Many people tire quickly of being bombarded with emails.
Oh, and I also read your article you linked us too... and like all your groups.
I do not type in the ("). I find that the email app does not handle them properly all the the time. I do know that the app inserts the (") in the appropriate positions when it sends the email.
The key to using the group-mail effectively is not to over use it. Some people blast off mass-mailings to accompany every C&P article they post. Doing that dilutes the value of the email to both the mail-sender and their connections.
Maybe it's just me, but I find it irksome that many people do not take the time to type in a title to their emails. These are often the same people that place all their connections in the "TO:" address box so I have to scroll through all 273 of their connections to get to the actual content of the email. Now that I have posted this article, those that do those two things should no longer be surprised if their email goes unread.
"Not every article you publish on gather is worthy of a mass email to all your connections"
Welcome back! how was your holiday?
The procedures I outlined above for inserting a link in an email are still usable in the group-mail and I always try to remember to include a link to the group homepage when I use the group-mail to contact the group of new developments and articles in the group.
I would also caution group owners/moderators to be selective in how many and how often they send out group-mails. Members sometimes forget they joined a group and get preturbed about receiving group-mail just as they do with personal emails.
Use the
I hope people found this article useful. If not, you can always print it out at home and then use it like any newspaper - for wrapping fish, training puppies, and lining the bottom of birdcages!
Folks, especially if you are new to gather, Ron's group No Fighting Whining or Putting Things Down is a good place to get your feet wet in a group on gather. The group has a gentle atmosphere and is a place you can meet a lot of nice folks.
I hate wading through 200 e-mail addresses/names to get to a generic message!
Thank you for reading and commenting!!!
Mr Bill has shown me the light and I have metamorphosed into a Wanabe.
I'm not gonna tell you what Mr Bill is.
Shhhhh....
Thanks Bill...nice job!
Because I don't like getting them, I don't ever send emails about my articles.
I have enjoyed the weekly newsletters sent out by a few of my groups, however get regular emails from another group that I delete to save my sanity.
I think most folks agree with you about the abundance of emails. I doubt the email annoucements are going away anytime soon. That being the case, I wrote this in hopes that those who use email to solicit readers will do so in a more effective and prudent manner.
Thanks for the valuable information/advice.
Namaste, Wayne
Remember, you will need to substitute your URL and Article Title. Otherwise, if you just copy and paste my sample code you will create a link, but it will link to my article...not all bad...but not what you are hoping for. ;-)
To test your new skill, send a link to just yourself and see if it works before sending it to all your connections.
I think that others are also doing the same they read what ever they want and like! So trusting all other I want to allow their free will to read!

Save some time and copy the body of this article into a document on your home computer, give it a name like "gather tips" and then when you come across other tips you want to use, you can add them to this article and create your own personal tips sheet. It will be much easier to find on your own computer when you want it most!!!
I'll also add something about the mass emailing of "please read my article" or "I've posted a new article." Many people here do not like the mass emails and you'll find out who they are quickly! However, your email to please read will be much better received if you take the time to comment on other articles. If you are simply asking others to read but have not gone out yourself to read and rate their articles or images, expect some backlash.
I have found many tips here in your email.....Now what are ya gonna teach me next?? How to get more readers?? LOL
I will take your suggestion to BCC most of the names. I've tried sending my mail to myself and not had success. I can try again.
I didn't want to single out the people that I'd deleted from the group box, so sent to everyone.
No one seems to have taken offence.

I finally just quit copy and pasting links. If it's clickable I click. Otherwise forget it!
