In Loving Memory of our Son Brent (written by Pam)
Something happened way back in December of this year that I just cannot get out of my mind and I woke up this morning thinking about it as well. I wanted to share it with you all today.....believe or choose not to believe.
December 1, 2006 was the first anniversary of Brent's death. His Dad and sister Melissa decided they were going to spend the day together hiking Hawk Mountain - a place where the three of them had hiked many many times.
When the kids were small Bill (Dad) used to stop on the way to Hawk Mountain, kids in tow, and pick up a pack of cherry lifesavers and blueberry tastycakes for Brent and Tastycake cupcakes for sister Melissa. On the hike up the mountain when the kids correctly identified wildflowers, trees, etc., Bill would give them one cherry lifesaver as a reward. At the top of the mountain they would sit and have their tastycakes and cupcakes together.
When Bill and Miss decided to do this last 12/1 I thought I would go to the store and get cherry lifesavers and pies and cupcakes. Bill told me you will never find a pack of just plain cherry lifesavers - they don't make them much anymore around here. Not to be deterred I went to the store - could not find any cherry lifesavers, only the five colored packs. Went to the tastycake section and no tastycakes either.
I decided to go to the check out and ask them when they would be stocking tastycakes and while
tanding in line I look over at the candy section and there, believe it or not, was ONE pack of CHERRY lifesavers. I picked it up in my now shaking hands and purchased it. They told me they wouldn't have any delivery of tastycakes that day.
In the car I sat and stared at this pack of lifesavers for a long time. I decided to go across the street to our Turkey Hill store to look for tastycakes. Of course there were lots of cupcakes and many different kinds of pies - low and behold there was ONE blueberry pie left. it was like it was there just waiting for me to arrive and purchase it.
When at the cash register paying for the pie and cupcakes I just started to cry. Of course the cashier was worried about me and so I felt I had to explain this incredible thing that has just happened. She came out from behind the register to give me a much needed hug and said "your son will be with you on this trip today ma'am, and he wanted to make sure you had all you needed to make it just right".
When I came home and laid down the lifesavers, pie and cakes and told Bill my story of what had just happened, he did like me - just stared at them for the longest time.
Bill, Miss and yes Brent went on that hike that day. He was with them as surely as I am typing this to you now.
I cannot forget this event, it plays over and over in my mind on a rather regular basis. I just felt I wanted to share it with you all today for some reason. Believe or not - up to you.............for me it was and continues to be one of the most comforting things that has happened since 12/1/05.
I believe our Angels walk among us - sometimes we just don't hear it or see it.
Remembering you always, loving you forever Brent
Love,
Your Other Mother Pam
