"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing, which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than him." -- John Stewart Mill (1806-1873)

Wars that have started from recapture of Kuwait from the hands of then dictator Saddam and later the ousting of Taliban alongwith Laden followed by ouster of Saddam himself etc etc were only a prelude to the great war on terrorism. In a way, US could not have avoided such a confrontation as they were already in the bad books of some of the Middle-east countries including Iran. The great hostage crisis had forbode a warning that US had to be on the offensive against evil elements that were only waiting to pounce on the great nation. It cannot be even said that US could have evaded the present situation with its forces being engaged in Afghanistan and Iraq what to speak of the Iranian antagonism. Even by not routing the Taliban and Saddam, US could have been at the receiving end of terrorist elements that were alrealdy organized under Taliban and Ladan with the connivance of some other Islamic countries. The Sept.11 attacks were only the boiling point of antagonism by terrorists and the long drawn out battle on terrorism was only waiting to happen even if US had not involved in the rout of Taliban and Ladan with them.
What is to be lamented is that other world powers like Russia, China etc do not see eye to eye with the US, in the face of which the world stands divided in its fight against terrorists. Should this continue, then the world only needs to anticipate greater catastrophies that could put an end to at least in part if not the entire world.
