I recently picked up a copy of Mandy Moore's Coverage. It's a cover album of '80s pop hits and, I hate to admit, I love it! It's super poppy, but Moore has a good voice for pop and the vocals are obviously hers and not courtesy of her IT team. I've also been known to put soundtracks (esp. Austin Powers and What Women Want) into heavy rotation on my personal playlist. Cheesy? You bet, but that won't stop me from listening - alone in my car, where no one knows but me. What CDs do you hide away from your friends and loved ones? Do you have a playlist in your iPod titled "Work Mp3s" that's really show tunes or thrash metal? 'Fess up!

I can pretty much live without his studio catalogue but that album is plugged so directly into the pleasure centers of my brain, having been brought up with it playing on holidays, summer vacations and sunny saturday mornings throughout my childhood, that I could hardly remain completely happy without it. If any one has the patience I can take them through and show them, item by item, why it is a brilliant piece of work and not something to be ashamed of. But all the same, people get such condescending sneers on their faces whenever anyone mentions John Denver that I keep it in a brown sack away from the rest of my albums. It's my secret weapon against bad days and hard times and also, I fear, a threat to my credibility as a hip music commentator.
Though I can't listen to that whole album with anyone else around. Certain songs make my a bit misty.
