I'm in shock. Can you imagine what $100 million looks like? Can you imagine having that kind of money to donate? That's the story.
A University of Chicago alumnus donated $100 million to the school to help deter costs to it's undergraduates.
"The cash gift, from an anonymous donor who graduated in the early 1980s, will provide full scholarships each year for about 800 students whose family incomes are less than $60,000. Another 400 of the college's 4,400 undergraduates, whose family incomes are less than $75,000, will have roughly half their loans replaced with grants."
This donation will provide this assistance for the next 15 years!
This story is making me all teary-eyed. For many high school students, college is only a dream. Most cannot afford it. And those who take out the loans find themselves in debt post-graduation. My college education was paid for.... But, I still have one student loan that I'm paying on. I'm thankful that it was minimal compared to what some of my friends are looking at for the next 10-15 years.
This gift though is the most generous thing I have ever heard of. This will impact the lives of thousands of future college students. I am in awe of the person that is giving so selflessly. How about this for feel good news?!?!
"The donor also said in his statement, "I am giving this gift to the University of Chicago because I believe it had a profound effect on my life and in particular on allowing me to survive untold failures and persevere in mad adventures that have rewarded me with the financial resources to make this gift." Jessie, my husband's friend's kids go to Kalamazoo High School because of the college incentives. They actually moved out of Paw Paw so that they could take advantage of that offering because it really is generous.
