OMG!
If you don't know exactly where your food is coming from... read this book.
Even if you NEVER eat at a fast food joint... read this book.
If you have children who eat school lunch... read this book.
If you eat beef... or poultry... or pork... read this book.
It is one of the scariest books I've ever read.
I am glad I haven't eaten beef since I was 18... but it's time to go fully vegetarian! Nothing is safe - and our government is not making any foods we eat any safer.
Granted this book was published in 2002. I hope there have been changes, but I somehow doubt it.
Sociology, current events, biology, disease prevention, health... it's all in this book!

Thanks Leslie for the review.
The thing about it that's even worse is that food inspection rates have decreased due to funding in recent years, which is why so many problems...from peanut butter to spinach. No doubt meat is the worst, but there are plenty of other questionable food processing plants. I am sure this book is quite relevant even all these years later!
Thanks for posting your review to the Gathe group, Bookin'.
Food has become scary stuff. The book sounds interesting.
i cant read this because i live in a bubble where the food magically floats to my plate.
but great review :)
LOL I agree with you, Patty! Some things are better left unknown!
LOL It sounds like it would be a great read but I think in this case ignorance may in fact truly be bliss!! Great review... I will probably give in to my curiousity and read it and then regret reading it as soon as I do.
Yikes. I think ignorance is bliss as well. I wonder if the library has it.
Thanks for the review
I don't think eating vegetarian is going to keep you safe. Our food system needs a complete overhaul, but the only way it will get it is for the "grassroot" movement to demand better handling and quality. Eat locally from farmers who practice organic, conscientious growing and feeding. That's the only way to ensure a good supply of food.
I read this book when it first came out...gives one pause...
other info sources on our food pipeline:
"In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan -good book, see my review
"The end of overeating" by David Kessler- from former head of FDA
I have both of those on my wishlist along with the Kingsolver book about food and its sources.
t y so
"I don't think eating vegetarian is going to keep you safe."
True, true, true. But neither is eating organic. A recent study finds high levels of Bovine Growth Hormone in organically grown leafy vegetables and tubors. It comes from the manure used in the growing process.
Aspartame, Propyl Gallate, BHA, BHT, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Potassium Bromate, MSG, Acesulfame-K, Red #40 et al., Yellow #6 et al., Blue #1 & #2 et al., Olestra, Nitrites and Nitrates, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Brominated Vegetable Oil, Carageenan, Neotame, Sucralose, Sulfites, Saccharine, Bisphenol-A, RgBH, Artificial Coloring, Natural Coloring and a myriad of additional additives are ALL poisons. The real rub is that many of them take many, many years to produce heart and kidney diseases, cancers, and general illnesses.
In a 5 foot by 5 foot space you can grow enough vegetables indoors to feed two people year round. We do.
great idea, but I live in a city apartment.
I read it when it was first published, it's an eye-opener!......PIF
wow pif
I think I saw this guy on TV. PIF
Very nice review.

Thanks for the review Leslie - will take a look - it sounds like an important book to read. I'm really working on healthy eating this year and learning new things is one of my priorities.
The author was interviewed last night on "The Colbert Report" - there's a new movie coming out based on his research about factory farms. The movie is called "Food, Inc."
I think I'll pass. I place my trust in God so I'll pray before I eat! :)

Sounds scary! PIF
Now you are scaring me.
