My wife received an email from the "IRS" telling her that she had a refund of $99.23 coming to her. All she had to do was click on the link in the email and give her information.
At first, she was pleasantly surprised and THEN SHE THOUGHT ABOUT IT FOR A MOMENT:
- since we file a joint return, wouldn't I have gotten the email too?
- we already got our 2007 refund quite a while ago
- since the IRS gave us our refund by direct deposit, what information from us would they possibly need?
- THE BIGGEST CLUE: the link DID NOT GO THE IRS WEBSITE!!!
If you get an email like this and you think it might be legit, contact the IRS and see if you really are getting a refund.
Scammers aren't stupid, but they're hoping that you are. They know that with the holidays coming up, most people are chomping at the bit to get any extra money. They also know that many people are getting wise to the Nigerian scams that have been around for a few years.

Our local news here in Omaha, reported this scam a couple of weeks ago. They stated that the IRS never uses email to do their business, and good job Kathy, for knowing that it should of gone to both of you because of a joint filing....
