With today's fast paced world and fast food restaurants springing up everywhere, there is a growing concern for healthy food.Iwas raised on wholesome food, with veges out of the garden and limited red meat.
When I was little, eating out was a rarity. There werent many restaurants and certainly no fast food places. There was maybe two chain grocery stores in town.Small individual mom and pop corner stores offered the milk and bread. And I dont mean dairy marts, either. There certainly werent snacks for grabbing at the check out.
As I grew older,I went the way of everybody, chipping out and making sure pop was in the fridge. As my waistline grew,my bloodpressure went up as well.I had to find a way of eating that controlled the bloodpressure, kept the weight down and the cholesterol.First I eliminated salt, then calories. It has been a struggle and I would be the first one to say that I slip once in awhile.I am 56 and still dont take meds for bloodpressure or cholesterol.A great deal does depend on heredity. Some people will have to have meds to intervene.
What I have found is that most food on the shelf at the store is processed;therefore having salt to preserve it.Even if you choose lite or reduced sodium, that necessarily isnt so.My motto:if its processed, its not good for you.I try to target fresh, then frozen,as far as veges are concerned.Plenty of fresh fruit.Meats:limit red and go for chicken, fish or pork.Limit bread, white rice, whole wheat.I have found a brand of frozen french fries I slide in the oven;almost no salt and fewer calories.
With a little preplanning and freezing ahead, even if you are on the go,you can change your lifestyle of eating.
This evening I am fixing fried potatoes with green peppers and onions.Since hubby raises organic angus beef,we are splurging and having a delmonico steak.
What are you fixing for supper?

OH ... I'm fixing homemade chicken noodle soup with broth from last night's chicken and dumplings. Adding sausage sandwiches on the side. Some mixture, huh? LOL. My husband's favorites!
