What would you do?

I would point out the error. A lot of waitresses have to account for their money at the end of the day, and an error like that comes out of their pocket, not the restaurants. I let stuff like this fall under the do unto others as you'd havethem do unto you. I would hate to be off by $20!

I would point out the error too. Waitresses don't make big dollars to begin with, she can't afford a mistake that big.

I gave her back the slips and told her to read all the totals. She was grateful for the opportunity to correct it. I have been a waitress and a cashier (when I was a young lady) and you do have the mistakes deducted from your pay! I gave her a good tip too! I am sure the $20 would have hurt her budget more than it would have improved mine.

I would point out the mistake. The poor waitress may have to pay for the mistake and they don't make that much to begin with.

A similar thing happened to me yesterday at the food co-op and I was charged almost 1/2 of the cost something should have been. Pointing out the mistake was not only the right thing to do but in the end it's you that has to pay the price of any dishonesty with higher prices.

Actually right after my daughter passed away , her widower and I were having dinner together and our waitress was a young girl and it was her first week, and she had tears in her eyes, and we, both concerned, asked her what was wrong, and she said someone had paid with a credit card and not signed the receipt. That particular restuarant had a habit if you gave them a credit card, to have you sign the back of the check when the waitress took it so that would cover if the patron forgot to sign the receipt. Well, evidentally the girl had not had them sign the back of the check and she began telling us the story and said they were taking it out of her pay and the check was for a large family dinner, and was $101.00. During dinner, she gave us very good service and tried valiantly to smile. Wayne and I had just lost Tracey, and at one time she had this girls job, for just a few days as she couldn't handle the weight of the trays, so we deicided when we paid the bill, we would each give her 50.00 tip so she had her 100.00. back. We did and told her not to tell anyone. So she smiled, and held our hands for just a second, and we left. We thought we felt Tracey smiling too. I know this sounds wierd, but lots of things do, and it just seemed the right thing to do. They do have to pay if they make a mistake, even a big one.

I'd have pointed out the error immediately. There is nothing I could do with 20.00 to justify stealing that money from the waitress. And in remaining silent that is exactly what it would have been. Cut and dry.

I would have (and have before, even on cash transactions) pointed out the error. I have grown up in and around restaurants, and servers. It would come out of their money, or their tips, and they can't lose it, especially with their tips being taxed now too.

Yeah, I'd have to point out her mistake, I would feel like a thief otherwise!
