"Why do you keep that old chipped teacup?"
She asked me as we sat down to sup.
"Why do you keep it upon that shelf
Next to the old Santa Claus and his elf?"
"T'was my Grandma's best cup that's why."
I told her as inside I started to cry
"Why do you keep it when it's broke?"
Her words just seemed to poke and poke.
"My Grandma died and since she's been gone,
It reminds me of the time when she won
That cup was awarded to her long ago
Her roses won first place that year you know
She worked real hard and was proud that day."
"But it's chipped, Mema just throw it away!"
"Sweetheart, one day you'll understand
It means so much as it was in her hand
It may be chipped but I still hold it dear
For she's been gone now for many a year
Some day you'll know just how I feel
My love for you is just as real!
Now finish your dinner so we can play
With all your dolls 'til the end of the day.
Solemn she asked "Mema, when will you go?"
I said, "Dear child, in life, we never know!"
