Can you tell me...

Can you tell me the purpose in rating the articles when some sour puss will come along and give a low score?  I have 6 comments, 5 praising one of my poems and 1 comment from me. I have 6 votes with an average of  7. Obviously some sour puss has decided to lower my score. That's okay, it's happened before and I had a 5.3 with all comments of praise and the extra vote that brought it down.  Others came along and gave me 10's raising it.   I'd like to know, do the scores count for anything?

There are more pressing and concerning issues in my life of course. I figure this is done to annoy me.  I know my IQ so it's not insult to my intelligence. I have had work published so it's no insult to my talent. I also know little tiny fleas are part of life.

 I don't think a low score is going to prevent anyone from reading my work so what is the point?

Please share, maybe you can shed some light on this!

All I know is a 0 couldn't stop me from reading your work. I love your style of Poetry. Don't let the sour puss sour you or your writing. I don't even know how to check the scoring but I don't think they can touch you at all. You're a wonderful poet.

I agree with Flit. I don't really pay attention to the ratings on my work. It doesn't matter much in the big scheme of things:)

It has to be someone/s who suffers from low self esteem. This has gone on for as long as I've been around Gather.

Thanks FNYV, I know some people were ready to quit gather because of it. I thought the points were on the comments. To me I think they are wasting their time.

Heather, there IS no point to the stars anymore.

They were intended to be a reflection of the rating a person thinks your work deserves. That would require that everyone use them properly. Even so, I don't think I'd pay a bit of attention to them. I don't.

For instance, for the poetry snobs, they might find a silly comedic poem to be droll. So they might think that poetically it's not worth many stars. However, someone else might understand the humor and rate it high just for the amusement factor.

The point is that it's all subjective.

Write what you feel you need to write here. Heck, some of the people who low ball articles are the same types of people who complain about crappy content.

To me, if you make an effort to write, even that deserves more stars than the endless copy and pasted emails....

Heather, don't let it bother you. The fact is, you get points because someone clicked to read your content and then more points because they clicked to rate it, regardless of HOW they rate it. Besides, it's well known that rating has no relation to the quality of the content.

Thanks Tiffany! I have only been on gather a few months. I write mainly poetry. I do write articles and here and there I write stories from the song titles of famous singing groups/singers.

Thanks Nic, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I enjoy writing so much and being on Gather has brought me out of a several year lull. It really gives me much more than doing crossword puzzles and watching tv. I can't do much but I can type and create and it makes my self esteem soar everyday! If any of my poems or thoughts help others, that is truly the icing on my cake! Thanks for explaining and the two cents! (Smile)

As a different kind of artist, I also deal with "drive-bys". Some people might really think it's not worth a 10, but I think some are just jealous or maybe they don't like my style of work. I might give someone a 9 once in a while because I think something is good, but could be better. Very rarely do I give anything less than 9, it would have to be pretty bad.

Heather, for the most part I don't even pay attention to the rating system. If something looks interesting I read it. I've enjoyed many of your poems so I'm more inclined to read your work in the future no matter what the "stars" say.

It's like participating in contests, it often depends on the judges. A different set of judges could very well judge the entries different. Subjectivity is part of the reality of writing.

I wish you luck with your writing and please don't let the rating system deter you from your work.

I like to read articles, no matter what they are rated.
I am not the one to ask, no one reads or posts on my stuff....lol
I think the points are used to decide who to be featured in monitored groups.
At least that's my understanding of why we rate stuff. Don't worry if I read or look
at it I always give 10's.

I get low-balled all the time. I do know who does it. There are some people who talk like they know it all, are spiteful and juvenile.

Since I figured it out, I will sometimes antogonize them just so there are more comments on the article I like or the person I like. More comments, higher score.
But that's only when I'm in the mood to provoke this child.

I will always read everything I see by you, give you a 10 and comment.

You are a good woman and deserve good things.

At first I took the ratings very personal.

If someone gave me low I was like awwww, but not I've come to realize some people probably just go around giving out ones and things.

The same people who probably don't even read the articles.

Heather - this is from one of your biggest fans - ME!! Who cares how many stars they give you that just means that you get points because they gave you some. Be it a 1 or whatever! Your writing has gotten better and better all the time and I love to read your stuff. Please keep up the good work and do NOT let those small minds affect you. You're bigger than all that.
