Weather Reports and Stupid People

We are having another storm (global warming) and the stupid weather people standing in a busy roadway and scraping the streets. The best one was a young reporter standing under a tree. He was showing us how it's cracking.

He says,
"This is scary. I'm scared. I'm really scared."

Next he decides to run out from under the tree and we got to watch the tree fall where his body stood seconds before.

How desperate can these news stations be? I'm scared to think about it.

I always wonder why they send reporters out in blizzards and ice storms. Don't they think we can look out our windows and see that it's crappy?

I think those reporters go out there, not because they want to, but because they're made to. I wouldn't risk myself that way, but I don't think those reporters want to lose their job so they do it.

I always thought it was silly for news reporters to stand outside during a storm. But standing under a tree about to fall, that's just plain stupid. At least he had enough sense to move out from under it right before it fell.

Being a former reporter, it isn't being desperate for news. There's always tons of news-worthy events going on. Finding news isn't the problem. The problem lies with the sensationalism of the reporter trying to make his story stand out more to get all the recognition. A good reporter will do whatever needs to be done to get the scoop. A great reporter makes you sit up and take notice of something that's not even news.

Take for example, the upcoming winter storm that is being predicted to strike the northeast. Somewhere in the forecasting stage, someone coined the title 'monster blizzard' with two feet of accumulation or more expected between 10:00 Saturday night and 7:00 Monday morning. The storm hasn't actually fully formed and already Friday morning, someone had deemed it THE monster blizzard of the decade, while those who were just receiving word of the possibilities were referring to it as a 'winter weather event'. By noon on Friday, people were out in the store's stocking up to prepare for the storm to beat all storms. Sometimes, reports turn out to be nothing more than sensationalism...and a lot of people have gotten 'hyped up' for nothing.

This kind of reporter mentality was spoofed quite hilariously in the movie "The Day After Tomorrow". Global warming had created tornadoes in downtown Los Angeles (Hollywood loves to destroy itself on screen) and a reporter is standing in front of a twister, saying, "Yes, folks, that's a twister right there behind me!" right before he gets wiped out by a flying billboard.

News has turned into entertainment, and I think this is a bad thing. With the right spin, you can get people worked up about the dumbest things, while important issues are ignored. Give me a juicy scandal in city hall any day! Those reporters are trying to succeed in a terribly competitive environment. If they don't get killed, the most daring wins. That's just not right.

Oh, I know what you mean, Carol. The local NBC affiliate, channel 5 out of Ft. Worth, is always doing this kind of thing, every time we have ANY kind of weather! They're like the weather/shopping channel, not like a news channel at all. And they are always scattering reporters all over the metroplex so we can see that they are, indeed, getting rained on or whatever. I hate that!

Actually, in my family we love switching back and forth between Geraldo and the MSNBC GUY whose name escapes me. They are the two we think are most likely go get done in by one of these things. In fact, I remember the MSNBC guy almost did get nailed by something during Katrina? I think it was.

Times like those make me so glad that I am not a reporter! I can't believe those yahoos sometimes. There will be a hurricane or something, everyone and their mother has been evac'd but here comes the news crews!
