I left this as a comment at another fine article about people changing their icons all the time. Since this is something I've wondered about, I decided to make it into my own article, too:
"Even though my photo is ten years old I won't change it until I'm 90. Some people now can change their icon all they want and I'll figure out who they are - for most of you, forget it. If you change your icon we can't be friends anymore because I have no idea who you are!!!!
The internet can be so disorienting, anyway."
I think it falls into the realm of good manners to make an effort to keep yourself EASILY recognizable to those you want to be your friends. As marvelous and unique as you really are, you can become confusing in the mass pile of always changing Gather friends.
(And I can be somewhat of a dingbat at times, too)

there are to many fake people in life as it is to haveta deal with them on the net to ya know.
i hate fake people and people who say they are your friends yet dont have the balls to tell you what they feel,they would rather hide..
those people arent worth a bugs droppings in my book

People change icons a lot there, too, but for some reason I can keep track of them better, there.
It always take me a bit to figure out who they are! Please if you are going to change, keep one thing consistent!
I probably will eventually change mine but not for now.

I haven't thought about it too often, and - when I have - I haven't come across a picture that screams "icon" to me.
This cat has so many accessories, she can't make up her mind...
I've only been on Gather a few weeks and the site is confusing enough as it is! :) At least if people keep their names the same, we'll try to keep up...
