Butters has had an interesting week. With a trip to the vet for his yearly boosters and flea treatments, he's been a little down in the dumps. But Butters has found something to take all of this off his mind...Love is in the air!
Late last week we found Kare Bear, as she's temporarily named; she was found wandering the roads in our neighborhood. Skinny and scared, I called her to our yard and found her to be rather friendly as well. Another black dog, (I don't know how this has happened as it was not planned), she was a little taller than our Black Lab, Sasha, but lacked the bulk due to her homeless situation. Not really quite sure what breed(s) she is, but Butters was so excited to have a new friend that he could hardly contain himself from inside the fence. I thought the poor little guy was going to shake himself into the ground! Assimilating Kare Bear into our family was easier than I thought; I had anticipated resistance from our Lab but she was more than happy to accomodate her presence. No, instead the problem ended up being Butters!
For those of you who aren't familiar with Butters, he's the little guy sniffing the camera in the logo. Yes, he has a slight Napoleon complex, yeah he has those species-identity issues, but through all his idiosyncracies he is quite the character! So I introduce the stray to our fold, and watch Butters greet her with love and adoration...oops! A little too much adoration! As with any proper lady, she quickly reminds him that although she's happy to visit and fill her tummy with some tasty treats, she really doesn't kiss on the first date! Okay, so we'll keep 'em separated until I can get her to the vet and make sure she's fairly healthy and see if we can locate her owner. Good news: she's not in heat!
Well, one week and numerous "Found" posters later, it appears that her owners may not show. We'll wait another week before we start her medical care, including a spaying later in the month if she stays, but Butters and Kare Bear must learn to get along. Apparently, no one told Butters this. Anytime he is allowed near her, he expresses his devotion, with all the devotion and fervor of Pepe Le Pew. "Permit me to introduce myself; I am your new lover!" was greeted with yet another reminder! Like Pepe, Butters did not accept this refusal, and ignoring it completely he was content to stand next to her, vigorously wagging his tail and waiting for her to return his affections. Not gonna happen!
Things have finally calmed down a bit. Although Butters offers his new lady his food and must bask in her glow every waking, (even sleeping), moment, she has realized that he is a necessary annoyance to her newfound home. They are chaperoned by me to insure Butters doesn't try to step over the line and find himself on the receiving end of a more severe resistance, but for the most part he is just smitten with his new love. I have made her appointment with the scapel to insure I don't end up with a litter full of little Butters, and soon he will become used to her presence enough to allow her a moment's peace...or so I hope!
Viva le Pepe!
