For Elise

My daughter had a little girl

 

and named her after me

 

Just switched one letter

 

So mixed up we wouldn't be

 

Elise is now fifteen,

 

will be sixteen soon

 

And she is very lovely

 

And many boys will swoon

 

How I wish her mother

 

Could see how she has grown

 

How very much she looks like her

 

I wish she could have known

 

How many times' I've had to turn my head

 

and look at her again

 

To see if it was my granddaughter

 

Or my lovely girl instead

 

When she walks away from me

 

I see her mother's walk

 

When she speaks with that soft voice she has

 

I hear her mother talk

 

These two should have had more time

 

To be together on this earth

 

For Elise needs her mother now

 

I try for what it is worth

 

To answer all the questions

 

that fill a young girls' mind

 

I look at her and smile regretfully

 

For those I cannot find

 

For only a mother knows their child

 

In this very special way

 

I am asking my daughter to help her

 

As every night I pray

 

To send her guidance to this lovely girl

 

That needs her very much

 

To come to her in tender dreams

 

And leave her with a touch

 

Of warm and gentle feelings, so needed by Elise

 

Send wonderment, joy, and love, from you

 

Help her to be ready to embrace her life

 

Whisper mother's wisdom in her ears,

 

Let her feel your presence, that is what she needs

Elsie, I just can't explain what this poem made me feel, except to say the incredible love that prompted it. Elise has you, and that counts for more than you might know. And you can tell her about her mother. Mostly, you can just love her. That's the biggest gift anyone can give.

It is so clear that with a caring grandmother like you she will benefit so much. I know it pains you that she doesn't have her mother with her but the mysteries of life are not ours to understand, always. I trust there IS a plan and if you do not, I mean no offense. I respect everyone's beliefs.

But we adopted a little boy whose mother had died and events leading up to that did convince me that it was meant to be. Nothing since then has changed my mind. He has done so much good for us and vice versa.

It is a great loss for a daughter not to have a mother, true. But to have a wonderful grand mother is no small thing. She is blessed in that way.

This is beautiful, Elsie! (Did I tell you I once had an aunt Elsie?) Anyway, my grandmother was more of an influence on me than my own mother. Sounds like it is the same for your Elise. I like the switch of the letters as well, because there are 3 KIMS in my family - waaay too many if you ask me.

This poem hit home for me, growing up largely on my own.
