NATIVE AMERICAN POVERITY [ NAVAJO ]

...........and this is now 2009, not years ago. Why is so much money sent out to third world countries when Americans must endure this level of poverty and humiliation. It's a disgrace......., these fat-cat "save the children" fund raisers should be looking in their own back yard.

Is "NAER" meeting and being able to keep up with the need?

Im sure it helps but cant meet all of their needs.
That is one of many things that pisses me off about our so called goverment.
We have children living in the streets with their parents and the goverment wants to us to send money to third world countries.

I apologize for my outburst Vickie but I get so pissed when I see the many thousands of dollars that are spent on TV advertising to raise money for third world countries. Knowing that for every dollar they raise, the intended recipient might see a lousy 8%. Oh yeah! Human compassion is big business.......if it's got a romantic name like Ethiopia or Biafra or some such thing. Just how many board members of these big name charities are either in of or related to someone in government?

I agree with you, Roger. I remember seeing places like this when I was a child. I am not exactly sure what state but Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico comde to mind. It was disgraceful then and it is unforgiveable now.

Seems to me they have been forgotten.

The same has happened to my people, the Maori in New Zealand. So much of their pride has been taken from once mighty warriors. It saddens my heart. I was friends with many Lakota Sioux growing up near Mystic Lake in Minnesota. They were a sad and depressed lot and i got my first taste of moonshine (homemade sour mash) hanging with my friends and girlfriends uncles. It wasn't until they built themselves a casino and now they make so much money they don't know what to do with it.

Yes but ther is some on rez. up there that are still very poor in poverity.
I am member of native organation here in Davenport,Iowa and we send clothing and personal idems up to them 3 or 4 times a year.
Truck loads full.

Admit going down into the main part of the reservation here is a little different, the federal government does have a way of making people feel as if they do not matter.
With the economy the way it is too......
I am hoping that reservation does not all look like this??

Yes very true about the Goverment does do this to not just Natives but to all that has less then others.
No the Reservations that have their own casinos dont look like this but most do.

Well hun I guess the Goverment lied again.
They have lied and stoled from us Native American from the beginning of America being founded.

This proves the government does not care for you and if they let this go on, think bout it, do you want them to run your healthcare.

We do need some way of jumpstarting something where we can show the American Indians that they need to and can help themselves by using the capitalist system to prosper. I know some tribes have done this, well with casinos and such, but that can only go so far. The Cherokee in Oklahoma do have electronic businesses that make parts for the Tomahawk Cruise Missile. We need to show the rest of the tribes that are suffering to use the system and find ways and foster any talents to bring them prosperity and a good way of life.

These people, I know, have been given the short end of the stick by the government and they still get shafted. The welfare system keeps them down and destroys pride by keeping them shiftless. I'm sure they have skills they can share, the thing is, they need a hand up to take advantage of them as well as teaching them more skills so they can work and prosper on their own without government.

The other side, we do need to get past the "woah is us" attitude. We can't go back to the past all the way, those days are gone. I know they have been hurt by various parties from government to private sources a long time ago. You have to look at the present and the future. I'm not being mean here but that attitude destroys self esteem and the desire to succeed. When you launch a rocket into space, you need to reduce as much drag as you can, so in order to fly, you need to get rid of this drag on their lives.

Myself some of my ancestors suffered too, being part Russian Jew, but I cannot let it get to me. We do need to remember so hopefully those abuses will not happen again, but I cannot let my past hold me down.

The welfare system destroys talent and human capital that can benefit them and all of us.

I'd like to see private industry, once times get better, maybe they can invest in these people to help them prosper.
