My amazing friend, Kristin, invites me to join her every year in turning her tree prunings (kindly done by her handy husband, Dick) into a fabulous and fragrant winter garland for my front door. This year I was unable to join the party but she allowed me to do it on my own a few weeks ago. I decided to photograph the process and to share it with my friends here on Gather.
These are the basic materials you will need. I have a double door and will require a lot of cuttings to make the garland. Measuring the height and width of your door is the very first thing you need to do in order to know how long your garland will be.

Here are two different kinds of eucalyptus. This tree is fragrant and repels certain insects (but not spiders.)

Here is the very first bunch wired on to the measured twine string. But don't forget to put a knot in the middle of the string before you start!

Keep adding bunches of cuttings layered just a few inches further up the twine on top of the previous bunch.

Now I am very close to the middle knot and so it's time to make the top center piece that will have to be made as a bunch that branches out from the center. Here I used bay (laurel ) leaves and Acacia buds.

Time to start from the other end

If you are actually serious about making one of these you can always send me a message for more details. I keep it up for several months until too many spider webs accrue.

That door looks magnificent now. I also looked keenly at the potted plants there..I am fond of keeping them too!
It appears that one of the eucalyptus is what we in Oz simply refer to as blue gum even though there are differing varieties such as Tasmanian and Victorian blue gums.
That's a wonderful decoration. Something that seems to add freindliness to the house.
I see why you must have that middle kot. It's really very important.
Do you have Eucalyptus bushes in the US? We have the trees only here but they do have a powerull fragrance.
Great photo essay.
Tom, bring the parasite and I'll add it to the swag!
Bob, There is only one more like it in my neighborhood, and that is at Kristin and Dick's house! That is to say that it is not typical out here.
Wish I could invite you inside for a cuppa!
Your garland is stunning!
