A HOT Day At The Zoo~OR~My First Photo Essay

This is my first attempt at a photo essay. I hope I did it correctly and I also hope you enjoy it.

 

My daughter and I visited the local zoo. It was very hot and humid, but tolerable.

I hope you will enjoy a few of the images I snapped while visiting a different world.

 

We went to the aquarium first. Not my favorite place and this could be one reason.

                                                                                                                                                              Piranhas! I could not get over how they were just staring at US! They never did swim around. They watched us watch them. Hungry, perhaps???

 

 

 

Well..onto the next group. Anyone for some hearty fishing?

 

 

 

 

We were not allowed to fish so we decided to visit the butterfly house.

 It was the best part of my visit.

The enclosed area was rather warm but was like a bit of heaven. My daughter shared a bench with a beautiful butterfly who had black and red stripes like my daughters leggings!!

There were several colors and shapes and sizes of butterflies. Take a look:

 

The butterflies enjoyed dining on fruits.

 

 

The next image was one of my favorites. I really think you will have to click through the images to make them large enough to truly enjoy!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now on to the house of birds.

 

Below is a hungry lory parrot. My daughter had fun feeding him.  These birds were not only noisy....but also very bright. We got a small cup of nectar to feed these lovely birds. One left me a small present! (yuck)

 

 

 

 

Now~to an animal that I thought was sort of cute....but I did not get the name of it. Anyone know what it is?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Time passes and tiredness sets in. You know it is time to go home when you see a hot and sweaty face like this:

You are right - those piranhas were just staring at you. My son used to have one for a pet. Yuck.
Can't think of the name of those guinea pig thingies. I believe they are from South America and people eat them down there.
Your daughter is a cutie pie. Looks like her mom maybe? ; )

Very nice photo essay. The butterfly's were beautiful and the fish were cool too. It looks like that one animal was some kind of a groundhog or beaver or something like that. It was neat that the one butterfly matched your daughter's pants. Sounds like you both had a lot of fun. Your daughter is precious. Thanks for sharing everything from your day with us.

Your first, Huh? I bet you say that to all your photo essays! Looks like you had a good time in spite of the heat, and you recieved presents as well. the fat little rodent looks like it might be a Capybara, a favorite meal of Jaguars. I can't place the cute little primate with the striped legs, though...Wasn't there a sign on the display?
You know, Jackie, When he was still alive, my father would go to the zoo every September 8th, and throw rocks at the storks. What was THAT about?

By the way, out of the 17 (I think) or so species of piranha that live in the Amazon, only one of them are carnivorous. Most of them eat vegetation, from what I understand.

Oh my gosh! This was so awesome! I think that little animal is the same one I ran into in Yellowstone - if so, that's a yellow-bellied marmot. I was terrified when I saw him one foot away from me because that is one giant rodent.

I love your lorekeet photo! Did you get pooped on? That always happens to me too! Our zoo (well, the one in San Diego) has a lorekeet feeding area too - that is so fun!

You can make your photos full-sized inside your essay super easily. All you have to do is load them up like you did, then click on the photo you want to use, and it will open in a separate window, then click and drag it into your essay. You have to make lots of space for it though or else you will get frustrated because all your text will start wrapping around it. If you have any questions, let me know!

great pictures! I've been to a butterfly conservatory like that, and it's so wonderful -- and romantic, too! :) I think there must be some kind of rule that you can only go to the zoo when it's miserably hot outside... ;)

Fun essay. Piranhas aren't such bad guys. Their "bad" reputation for attacking people doesn't fit the facts .

The piranhas would have unsettled me as well - this was a great peek into your day at the zoo - I loved the photo of the butterflies on the stump!

I looked up pictures of the capybara in Google, and that is exactly what it is. The world's largest rodent, an aquatic mammal, known to weigh up to 110 pounds, and high on the list of dinners preferred by the Jaguar, and they cover almost all of South America.

Greate photo essay, Jackie! Love the shots of the piranhas (ditto on the creepy), butterflies (so pretty!) and the beautiful birds ( ditto on the yucky present!). That's one really adorable little girl you have! It looks like a wonderful day! Not sure about the animal... for some reason the word "okapi" comes to mind.... probably cause it's late and I've lost too many brain cells! LOL :-) Thank you for sharing your day!

Those red black and whites are I think Postman butterflies...isn't it cool how certain butterflies will come to you because of the colors you wear? I love it! When I go to visit butterfly sanctuaries, I always wear one solid color and carry a bag with bright colors! Jackie you did a GREAT job with your first photo essay! If you wish to enlarge your photos for viewing on photo essays, just click on the image itself once it comes up, and it will bring up a larger window and you drag it to the text area. I think that looks like a woodchuck or something like that, but I am going to check it out! Nice job!
