In "Murphy's Rule for Old Houses" I expounded on the ins and outs of fixing up an elderly dwelling, discussing in depth the lengths to which one must go to "keep the ship afloat" as it were.
After years of knowing we needed a roof, we finally scraped together enough money to get one. The only real trouble seemed to be that no one wanted to put one on our house. I find it odd, that even when I called with cash in hand, roofing contractors never seemed to want to give me an estimate. One reason might be that I preferred to layer the new roof over the existing roof. I have my reasons, including the desire to preserve tires (roofing tear-offs generate lots of stray nails), health concerns, and expense. Regardless, nobody, nadie, ningun persona, nary a soul could be interested in this project. Well, we'll show them.
Since no one wanted to do this work, we will save a ton on labor. All that money has gone into materials. Next week, God willing, the creek don't rise, and without rain, we are putting a new tin roof on our house.
You'd be surprised what a small space the materials take up.
I was surprised at how quickly we emptied our bank account.
This home has been the scene of the happiest days of my life. I'll be putting my blood, sweat, tears and money into it for years to come.
Somebody pass me a hammer.
