In Part 1 , I mentioned that you and I "DON'T'' own a copy of The Original King James Version of 1611 ( like we always thought we did .) What we most likely own is a copy of The King James Version of 1769 . { Do what ??? you say .}
You most likely have a copy of the 1769 King James , because that was the final change in The King James series. These were printing, spelling, and textual changes carried out in the King James Version of 1629, The King James Version of 1638 , The King James Version of 1762, and The King James Version of 1769 --- a modern day copy of which probably lies on your desk, no matter what it says . { And no, I'm not making this up . And I didn't even mention The King James Version of 1613 . }
I also mentioned that one reason you don't have an Original King James Version of 1611 is becuase , most likely you don't have 80 books in your Bible, nor even knew they existed. Those 14 books you probably don't have ( with titles you wouldn't believe ! ) make up what is referred to as The Apocrypha . ( I'll leave that study up to you .)
All King James Versions ( still hard to accept isn't it ...) published before 1640, held The Apocrypha ( 14 books ) . There might have been more after that . However , after The Apocrypha's long, controversial history : in 1880 , The American Bible Society voted to remove it from The King James ( although King James had forbidden its removal in his day . ) And in 1885, it was officially removed from English printings by The Archbishop of Canterbury .
Interesting note here : In 12 days President Elect Obama will be sworn into office using the same Bible that President Lincoln was sworn in with . That Bible was published by Oxford Press in 1853. I have not been able to prove to my own satisfaction that it is a KJV ( though some say it is .) But, being published in 1853, it may very well be The KJV of 1769 --- and the 2nd question on some folk's minds is : Does it contain The Apocrypha. ) If you know, write in.
But once again , we have to accept the fact that, contrary to the misinformation handed down over the last 400 years : barring collectors of Rare and Old Bibles, we don't have a copy of The Original Authorized King James Version of 1611. ( although I saw a copy of a similar one online today for $18,000.00 , if you're in the market .)
Next time we'll look at why your King James Version of '' 1611 ", is neither original --- nor specifically " authorized ."
Yep, we have lot of unlearning to do . Respectfully , Lonnie R. Fowler .
*** although this began as a response to Sandy A's original article ' What Is The Bible ' , I've changed this and other installments to Lonnie's WHAT THE BIBLE ' IS '. *** Also I am trying to write brief installments, not to load you down. LRF

Not only that, but we don't own a copy of original BIBLE, in Hebrew and Greek, as well - only "copies from the copies from the copies", as Bart Ehrman would put it. ;-) And if we don't have an original, what then to say about a translation?...
