Two members of the Supreme Court are assassinated, which upsets law professor Thomas Callahan enough to get him drinking. His student and girlfriend, Darby Shaw, is concerned enough to do some research on the killing. After a week, she comes up with the Pelican Brief, which she then dismisses and almost throws away. Thomas reads it and decides to show it so someone he knows in the FBI, Gavin Verheek. Next thing you know, copies of the Pelican Brief are being passed out all over Washington DC, but no one is really taking it seriously. At least not until Thomas Callahan is the victim of a car bombing.
Darby Shaw was also supposed to be in that car, and now knows that she needs to go underground, and fast. She gets in touch with Verheek, but then he gets killed, too. Then she meets reporter Gary Grantham. Eventually, they link the Pelican Brief to the highest levels of government, but will they survive to tell the story? Darby never seems to know who is trying to kill her and who is trying to protect her.
I was almost turned off by the first few Grisham books I read because they seemed to have the same plot. This is not one of them,
