I think it's a sensory thing and has more to do with the way they check each other out by sniffing each other's bottoms. It may also have to do with their reproductive sensors in some way. Who knows? I don't think it will ever be fully understood. I just know that I hate it when they stick their butts in my face. I always turn them around and tell them I don't want to smell their butt, I want to see their face.

It is caused by a reflex point in their back. When it is touched it causes this reaction.

At birth, the kitten is blind. It has no idea where the milk is. The mother cat licks the kitten. The tongue goes from the mother's body to away from the mother's body. The kitten resists the lick. The kitten then has the mother's tongue going in the direction the fur points from the kitten's head to its tail. When this sensation is perceived, the kitten straightens its back legs to push it to the milk. Since there is no need to get rid of this instinctive behavior, the cat retains it throughout its life. Thus, the cat straightens its back legs when stroked or even when scratched on its back near the tail.

How can something that licks it's rear all day, be so picky about what it eats? A quote from a freind of mine when shopping for canned cat food...
