Yeah, that was peculiar.
A guy I didn't recognize, wearing a blue T-shirt with 'steamfitters' on the front in yellow text, banged on our door a few times, then started to head around to peer into our backyard. When I opened the door to ask him what he wanted, he was apparently looking to speak with my (deceased) father-in-law about purchasing a truck that was lurking in our backyard. Seemed normal enough, but after I'd concluded the conversation and he was going on his way, a few things struck me as peculiar.
1) There was a large white 4x4 in front of our house that presumably belonged to him; when he left he got in on the passenger side. Someone else was driving it.
2) Although he professed to have known said father-in-law for years, he didn't seem to know the name of his wife.
3) Although there is indeed an old welding truck in the backyard, I don't think it's really so visible from the road. The guy had claimed that said father-in-law had sold him scrap in the past, though, and it has been there for a very long time.
I admit, I'm cynical and vaguely paranoid about the world at large, and I often fear the worst, but something just vaguely unsettled me about the conversation after it was over. I figured at the very least, it was something I should probably write down on the very off chance that it becomes relevant in the future and isn't just a product of my own paranoia.

Needless to say he invested in some security until the house was finished!
Or was he off knocking on someone elses door? :o\
You need to make notes on how these people looked...what they wore, their hair, weight, height, skin color, accents, any moles/birthmarks/scars they had, mannerisms...everything you can remember might come in handy.
I think I'd do a little asking around the neighborhood to see if anyone else has had visitors asking questions or seeming to be looking for someone who is no longer living there. ( it's so easy to get old addresses/names from old phone books!)
Also, call the local police and see if anyone else has reported similar things happening to them.
There are lots of people who are desperate these days, in every city and town across the country. And things are getting worse all the time what with the price of gas, food, housing....EVERYTHING has gone up! And so many people are out of work...laid off due to jobs being cut/moved overseas. Or jsut plain too lazy to work--but never too lazy to steal/scam someone!
Be careful out there!
Sshh! They're on the web too!
