A lot of people need them and I do understand that better then you all think. Here is what I do not get though. Being a cashier at Walmart Superstore you see it all. I see some people come through with there food stamp card and act like they are better then you because they get them.
It is a good thing if you can to work. there are people out there who do abuse the system and can work but just sit at home. Well, ok if you want to.
BUT....don't come through the cashiers line and act better then them because you are getting free food while they are standing on there feet and hurting there legs and back to ring you up. I have seen some of the moms just treat those little kids awful, by the same token I see this 2,3, 4, yr old just go off on the parents. That will be a whole nother artice here.
Bottom line. If you get food stamps you can still be respectable. You don't have to be so hateful to the cashiers and through and yes slam your 12 pkgs on the belt. Or gripe how we sack. You can ask nicely. You can be poor with some pride in yourself and your behavior you know.

I have worked since I was 13 and actually found the once poor, now reasonably wealthy ,the ruddest people I have ever seen.
Mostly women that grew up with nothing, married a man who worked hard and eventually got to be wealthy, To me these, turn out to be the snobbiest and ruddist people I have ever dealt with in a public job.
I try to always remember, we never know what another person is going through, what they're feeling, or what struggle they're carrying inside, so to treat them with a basic decency or respect. I wish more would do the same. But then, sometimes I forget, too, only to have someone be a total jerk to me when I'm worried sick about something and something I say or write doesn't come out right... then I remember.
What actually disgusts me is... when I see a couple with children checking out, and the belt is nothing but convenience food (frozen, just thaw and eat), top-brand stuff, pop, snack cakes and chips... I can almost guarantee that they're on foodstamps. 90% of the times I see nothing but junk it gets paid for by foodstamps. If someone is so poor they can't afford food why do they waste their foodstamps on soda pop and potato chips?
Dan, don't know where you're at but it does sound like your welfare is in great need of an overhaul. We have a "2 years and out" program, and to receive financial help (cash) you have to be enrolled in the states job assistance program... basically you have to be there 30 hours a week filling out applications and actively seeking work.
If someone here is just receiving medical and food assistance, they sure as heck ain't doing themselves a favor not seeking work. Michigan is currently looking into overhauling food stamps. As it stands right now the maximum amount of food stamps you can receive is $5.00 per day per person.
A few Michigan Representatives tried it out, they tried to buy their groceries on the $5.00 a day budget... they found out it doesn't give you much to go shopping with.
Now, if I am the cashier, I wouldn't want to see customers slaming on the belt. The behavior of slaming, no matter what the reasons are, isn't nice over all.
And by the way, we all should work if we are able. We are the contributors of our society.
You're making an inaccurate assumption. It's the same card for cash or food, it accesses whatever account you have, or both if you have both. Food can only be bought with food benefits, anything you want with cash benefits. You have to click a button on the machine that specifies which account to draw from, or the checker does.
That would get old quickly no matter what!
I'm sorry, but it just sounds like she's squandering what little bit of money she gets from disability and expecting the government to buy her food. Maybe she could use some budget counseling. There are also food pantries in many cities where she could get some help.
i remember years ago, i had 3 children and i tried to get food stamps, and i made $4.00 a month too much to receive them !!!!! i was really in need. and i would have bought he most for my money.
I do hate being in line behind people with food stamps and WIC though, but I bite my tounge and smile:)
