Starting school- Are you ready?

My kids start school again on Monday.  There are some schools around here that started on Friday and then across the river in Georgia they start on Thrusday. 

My kids are excited to go back to school.  I have gotten all there supplies except a couple things and they are going to have to wait until after payday for me.  We had the tax free weekend on school supplies and clothes in Georgia this past weekend and then this weekend it is happening here in Alabama. I do have to get my son another 2 binders for school.  I will pick them up this weekend. 

I have had 2 of my kids supply list for about 3 weeks now but did not get my oldest until yesterday.  I really can not believe some of the things we have to provide for the classroom.  I remember when it was crayons, markers, pencils, pens, glue, and paper.  Now it is cups, wipes, paper plates, paper towels, soap, kleenex, hand sanitizer, dry erase markers, graph paper, copy paper, trash bags, and healthy snacks.  I did tell my husband they will want the toilet paper too.   Did I tell you my kids are in 4th, 5th, and 7th grade.....

Do you have any thing weird on your list that you have to buy for your kids?

I am a college instructor. I am getting ready for finals now and then I get about two weeks off. Actually during my two weeks I will be writing syllabi and getting dental work done.
I am looking forward to next semester.
I don't have to worry about it too much as my kids are all grown now...though I do have to deliver by our local elementary school, that just means i have to get in there and go before 3:45p everyday......
I don't have school age children, but I will be starting college classes in three weeks. I think I might have everything I need. paper, pencils, pens, eraser.... AND the excessively expensive books. My husband is going to let me have his back pack.... and we will see if I need a lap top later on down the road.

We teachers are almost never ready! We have several "pre-planning" days, but most of them involve one meeting after another, so we accomplish very little. Then, at the last second, we rush to get everything done. Fortunately, I teach high school seniors, so they're perfectly happy to help with decorating bulletin boards and such, especially since most of my decorations are photos of them. Setting up all the paperwork means a lot of hours at home because we don't have enough time at school.

I'm heading back to college on the 28th and then I start classes on September first. I'm really anxious to go back...since I've been counting the days, hours and minutes with some of my friends lol.

Angela goes back Friday, but Christopher has another week. I don't have Pher's list yet....but his will cost me quite a bit, when I do get it. Angela's for 7th grade wasn't too bad...I still have to find her a band book.

I hate that Georgia goes back so darn early.

Jacob starts preschool Sep 1 and Joslyne starts kindergarten Sep 8 so we still have a month.
Only thing I thought was weird was new tennis shoes that they only wear to gym class they have to be left in their backpack in a zipploc. I guess they just got a new gym floor.

I gd has to have 4 different writing tablets, 1 spiral & 1 composition books. There are 2 writing tablets we have to been able to find. If I can not find I will get the closest size I can find. The only place I have found writing tablets so far is at Staplers and at CVS. Need to go and check out Office Max & Office Depot.

Gosh, where did the summer go?!? The expanded supply list is more than likely caused by shrinking school budgets. Most teachers I know have been spending out-of-pocket money on a lot of supplies for which they are never reimbursed. It's an unfortunate state of the current economy. Glad to hear your children are "excited" to return to the classroom - that's AWESOME!

I know here, the teachers were putting their supplies on the student list (sharpies, post-it notes, red grading pens, etc) because of reimbursement issues. They were also asking reliable parents to bring extras, to make up for the students who didn't bring anything. The school board finally put an end to the "required' supply list, but since I don't have a child in school I don't know how that's worked out the last year or two.

i agree that the enhanced class list is due to budget shortfalls for all districts across the country. michigan public schools do not start until after labor day. it was mandated a couple years ago in an attempt to increase tourism dollars that final week of summer.

that no tax weekend is a great idea!! a new school year can be so exciting. :)

Wow...school starts super early for you! I think our public schools start the following week. I agree that the list of needs is atrocious. Where do all our tax $$ go then????? I mean, I homeschool and yet pay taxes to help schools. I think I should get a tax break for not sending my kids to the school!! We "sorta" started today - just one subject per day for the next 2 weeks to ease our way back into it. We also have swim lessons daily right now

I'm not sure where you are located Renita, but if you have Hannaford Supermarkets in your area they have a marvelous program called "Hannaford Helps Schools" and home schools are included in the program, but you do have to sign up for it. Once you are signed up, and starting in September and running until December, you will get dollars credited for simple purchases of weekly products that they promote. Each store has a kiosk with all the participating schools names on it and a drop-slot where customers, friends, neighbors and relatives who shop at the store can deposit their "credited dollars." At the end of the year, your school will receive a check from Hannaford for whatever amount has been credited to you. You won't get rich, but it can help pay for textbooks. Just a thought.

Thanks for the info, Paula, but I don't have that store nearby. I'm in S. Florida and our options are Publix, Winn-Dixie & Albertsons. then of course Walmart (which I loathe).

I wish we also had one of these. This seems like a neat program. I know our publix gives so much back to our school of choice when we use our publix card there. I think it is 5 or 10%. Renita, do you'll have one of them. I am thinking you can find out about it on there website. If not let me know and I will talk to the manager here and ask her.

Have what, Jennifer? The Publix card? I do, but as far as I know it only adds $$ to my UPromise account when I purchase certain products.

I just took a picture of my card and will put it on later for you to see it but I don't think they do it in Florida. I wonder why the Publix in Florida does not do it or the penny item or double coupons?

Probably because either rents are so much higher, or they know there are alot more people with money down here! Sure sucks for us poor folk tho!

My kids don't go back for three weeks yet. And although I have a nephew that lives in the next state and gets a supply list for school, so far I've remained one of the lucky ones where the school actually still supplies everything but the book bag. Personally, I'm not ready for summer to be over yet. It feels like it just started. My two boys feel the same way I do, but my daughter is excited to go back. She's going into the intermediate school and is just so excited about going to a different school.

No kids here (and none in my future), so that isn't something that I have to worry about.

It does seem that some of the schools start really early.
