My son, who is almost 11, is in his 3rd year of playing baseball in the summer. He really loves the game, but gets down on himself because he's not the "best" player, or not as good as he'd like to be.
Tonight, he had a terrific game! I know I missed some of it, chasing my 2-year-old around, but I saw 3 great plays of his.
1 - he was at bat, and he did connect with the ball, but it didn't go very far. Most kids would have run half-heartedly, expecting to be thrown out. But he took off running fast to first ... and made it!!
2 - he was at shortstop, and a grounder was hit towards 3rd base. The 3rd baseman missed it, but my son stopped it. He threw it to first, and it got there. The runner beat it, so he didn't get out. But I was so proud of how well my son backed up his teammate!!
3 - Again at shortstop, a grounder was hit his way. He dove for it, and stopped it with his bare hand. Then he tossed it towards the 2nd baseman, who also caught it with his bare hand. And they got the out! It was one of the best plays I've ever seen at a baseball game at this level, and his teammates were slapping him on the back when they got back to the dugout. He was just beaming!!
I usually hate watching his baseball games. I find baseball to be very boring. Plus it was so hot and humid tonight that I could hardly stand it. But he did such a great job, he's still flying high! I wish I had brought a video camera with me. I'm proud of him!!

That is awesome! Good for him (and you).
That's great!
thanks for sharing.
He did have a good game! If he keeps practicing, he'll see improvement in his game. I wish him the best of luck!
Sounds like a great game. I'm not much of a sports fan myself but whenever he gets down on himself you can remind him that often times the "best players" are also the ones who strike out more, miss more balls etc.. too.
Edison failed a thousand times before making light.
Guess he wasn't too bright...
that better then my son at that age,, he was center field picking the daisies
lol. picking daisies.
That is so awesome! Those plays sound like lots of fun to see...and do as well!
That's good.

Jodie,
I have been coaching baseball for youth (9-15) for over 30 years. If your son is interested in getting better, please have him look at
http://www.unc.edu/~mason/baseball/
There is lots and lots of information there about how to play the game at his level. The descriptions are complete and explain why my suggestions work.
Thanks Larry!
That is definitely the sign of a good baseball player - running out what looks like a sure fire out. Does he have a favorite major League team or player?
Wow - what a great day!
Amber, he likes the Minnesota Twins most.
It's great that he is doing well with baseball. Maybe he will have a future in it.
He wants to be a professional baseball player. Of course, he also wants to work for NASA as an engineer. :-)
