Pennies in a jar

I have a friend who's been with her boyfriend for 9 years. They have 3 kids together and are NOT married, although they've been "engaged" as long as I've known them.
One day, I asked why they don't just get married already. This is what she told me "It's because of the pennies in the jar."

"WTH are you talking about", I said. Then, she explained her theory. She said "I heard this theory that if you put a penny in a jar for every time you have sex while you're single, you'll fill up the jar in no time. But, if you do the same thing for every time you have sex while you're married, you'll NEVER have enough pennies to fill up the jar, no matter how long you're married. So, we don't want to get married because our sex life will end....it's like the pennies in a jar."

I was shocked. I'd never heard that theory before, nor do I agree with it. What are your thoughts?

Well, I can't say I agree with it but if it works for them, then good for them if they've been together 9 years and still are happy together.

I have never heard that saying before but I have heard a lot of people complain that intimacy seems to dwindle once married. I feel that whether you are married or just living together, the intimacy is there if both people want it to be. It takes two people to keep the intimacy going regardless of if they are married or just living together.

The thing is that you don't care about your stupid jar any more once your married so it doesn't really matter. Plus lack of sex cuts down on laundry. You don't have to wash your sheets as often.

Trust me, I DON'T agree with what she said, nor the way they're living. I was always brought up that you get married THEN have kids, not the other way around.

Personally, we've been married almost 5 yrs and I think we have an active sex life

I disagree, but then again I'm not married. I've been with my boyfriend just over 2 years, and will probably be around 3 before we start thinking about actually getting married. I don't believe the pennies in the jar deal one bit, it's not something that just happens, its something those involved make happen.

If pennies in a jar is all that is important to their relationship, then they best not get married. I never heard that theory before, but I think a better one would be pennies for every time you say I Love You.

I've never heard it said quite like that, but I have heard that before. I don't really think that is true, though. The reason that people give for why sex slows down is because everything else gets in the way after you get married. Wouldn't it be the same thing if you're living together, and dealing with the kids and all that, whether you are married or not??

If they decided to get married, they could ask ppl to bring them pennies when they come for bridal shower, thus they jar can be full too. Am I right?

My brother had a similar theory and didn't marry his wife until after they had been dating for twelve years. She refused to have children unless they were married and she really wanted kids, so she actually moved out and told my brother that she wasn't going to waste any more time with him if he wouldn't marry her. Well, they got married, and now my brother often comments that he was wrong and they should have gotten married sooner. So obviously marriage didn't make things worse in his view.

I see both sides- I know people who are married and have great sex lives...but then there's people that I can pretty much guess they never do. It all depends on the effort you put in with your partner, I think.

I have never heard the story, but guess thats what they want..Some have other reasons like losing income, IRS leans etc; if sex is all there is too it, I would get married and drop quarters in the jar for the future.

hmm. i've never heard that before, but i have heard plenty of people complain that sex stopped after they got married.. but it wasn't specifically because of they got married as far as I know. The same things that would make the sex stop after a wedding are going to happen if you're living together..and I know all about sex stopping after a while in a relationship, unfortunately...and I've never been married. lol :O)
