Thank you, Kevin for bringing this issue to our attention. We appreciate it.
Our engineers are currently looking into this problem and we hope to have a fix deployed soon. In the interim, you can get around this problem by going to the 'Next' page and then returning to the first article listing page via the 'Prev' link, the view will then correct itself.
I have a group of members that comment on a daily article, and this article is limited to only a few members in the community (private), yet the page views are always much higher than they should be. You mentioned on a prior article that page views are added each time a person visits Gather.
So is it possible that one member can add multiple views to a single article each time they look at it, or is the security of our group and article compromised and more members are able to view it than we think? and how do we prevent this?
If you are posting an article to a private group or friend-set, only those specific individuals will have access to read rate and/or comment on that content.
The view counts for a content item do not reset and include views by both members and visitors, but not the content owner. On a content item (article, image, or video), we only count one visit per person each time they visit Gather, and the counts will be updated on a periodic basis.
For additional information please visit Jenn Hann's recent 'Site Updates' article. It can be found here.
What do you mean when you say -- each time they visit Gather?
Does this mean that a member of my group can visit the article every day and cause a new page view every day? Is this possible?
I am alarmed about this and your explanation doesn't really clue me in as to what is happening or why. Thanx
Maybe I can clear this up. The page view count is not the same thing is a count of the total number of members who have viewed (or can view) your article. If a limited group of members is active on an article or other piece of content for a period of time, the page view count will exceed the number of members who are able to view the piece. Over time, each member could cause multiple views to be counted. To prevent the "gaming" of this system of page views, and the associated "Most Viewed" lists, we cannot provide the level of detail on this that many members would like.
But the bottom line is, there's no reason to believe that the security of your content has been compromised, if your content view count exceeds the number of members who are allowed to see the content.
I hope that helps!
Is that why some articles on the Most Read listing appear every day and never go away?
For example, the afghan pattern articles and the expired dress contest. They always have huyndreds of page views every day. Is this the gaming you are referring to?
I am currently working on this issue and will be following up with you via e-mail as soon as possible.
Thanks for your patience.
No, what you are seeing on the "most read" list today is related to a glitch that's been affecting us for a while now. I've just requested an update on it from our development team.
Can you give us the URL's of any examples of this sort of article that you see on the site right now?
Generally speaking, commercial or self promotional content is OK to publish as long as the content is still informative and conversational in nature. In other words, if the promotional aspects of that content (referral links to vote for a contest entry, for example) were to be taken out of the article page altogether, the content could stand on its own merit and still be conversation worthy.
So, in summary, you are welcome to publish articles or images that may include self-promotional info or links, so that others may read and comment on them (like a book review, or an article about your contest entry, for example). However, you may not publish content for the sole purpose of promoting a business venture or sales opportunity.
If you'd like to e-mail us examples of some the articles you're concerned about, we'd be glad to review them, accordingly. Please e-mail them to support@gather.com
Thanks.
