This was the artwork and pictures from the reception of my solo art show called Till We Have Faces from the summer of 2006 at Barbella's Studio and Gallery in Pensacola, Florida.
you'll have to scroll thru the pics to see the reception shots as there are too many to put up individually.
Well, well... CC, I would never have pegged you as a fan of C.S. Lewis' works, but looking at the paintings and their titles, you've obviously read the book. The collection is breath-taking! You've really taken Lewis' imagery and run with it. Did you sell any (or hopefully all) of this? And did the buyers understand the imagery and the inspiration behind it?
A note on the book - I've always been amazed by Till We Have Faces. I always regretted Lewis' conversion to a conservative, almost fundamentalist, and definitely a medieval Christianity. When he stepped out of that framework, as he did with this book, he was brilliant.
"There are thoughts born in my heart, born in the pain of ending one life and beginning another, born in the excitement of a continuing search for Life's meaning. Some people do not have to search, but, I am one of the searchers. There are, I believe, millions of us. We are not unhappy, but neither are we really content. We continue to explore life, hoping to uncover its ultimate secret. We continue to explore ourselves, hoping to understand. We like to walk along the beach, we are drawn by the ocean, taken by its unceasing motion, its mystery and unspeakable beauty. We like forests and mountains, deserts, and hidden rivers and the lonely cities as well. Our sadness is as much a partof our lives as is our laughter. We Searchers are ambitious only for life itself, for everything beautiful it can provide. Most of all, we want to love and be loved. We want to live in a relationship that will impede our wandering, not prevent our search nor lock us in prison walls, that will take us for what little we have to give. We do not want to prove ourselves to another or to compete for love. This is a thought for wanderers, dreamers and lovers, for lonely men and women who dare to ask of life everything that is good and beautiful. It is for those too gentle to love among wolves"
Barbellas Gallery is proud to present Till We Have Faces featuring the work of artist C.C. Miranda.
Till We Have Faces is a collective of new oil paintings created by C.C. Miranda that explores deep into the psyche of not only the artist, but that of the observer as well.
Author C.S. Lewis was quoted in a letter to Dorothea Conybeare as saying How can they (i.e. the gods) meet us face to face till we have faces? The idea was that a human being must become real before it can expect to receive any message from the superhuman, that is, it must be speaking with its own voice (not that of its borrowed voices), expressing its actual desires (not what it imagines that it desires), being for good or ill itself, not any mask, veil or persona.
It was upon reading this passage that artist C.C. Miranda knew that she had found the perfect title to her show.
This is the first show that I am doing that is made up of images that come from deep inside of me, states artist C.C. Miranda, rather than just creating work that maybe more acceptable to the masses, in essence, truly finding my own artistic voice. Working in a limited palette of burnt sienna, black and white lends the work a feeling of stability and calm despite the sometimes turbulent imagery. The lucid quality of these images created by artist C.C. Miranda allows the observers mind to manipulate the faces, so that they undulate to the rhythm manifested by their own subconscious, creating a constantly evolving series of imagery, redolent more of a dance, than a flat visual statement.
Till We Have Faces will be on display from September 15, 2006 until October 24, 2006 with an opening reception on September 15th from 6-10pm. Also on display throughout Barbellas Gallery will be works created by several talented local and national artists.
thanks peter. i think even non-CS Lewis fans should read that book as the insight into self that it gives is well illustrated in a way not usually come across often.

some people understood the reference, others not so much, but the art is different for everyone.

I am a huge fan of "Till We Have Faces", consider it the finest explication of the myth of Cupid and Psyche in the English language.
So am I, Roy.
I am sure that Lewis experience of Christian Faith were informed by his keen interest in Medieval literature.
But, I don't think you can count him among the "fundamentalists".
At least not in the American Fundamenalis tradition.
Lewis was quite clear about his hatred of the priggish, prohibitionist, law-making Protestants of his day.
I love your artwork ! ! !
You must admit, poop makes good print.
