I've never had a laptop.
I've never used a laptop.
I've never even HELD a laptop,
but what do I want??????
You guessed it.
LOL
I want a laptop.
and I THINK I've found the laptop I want.
Here's the info on it -
It is a
HP 15.4"Diag Special Edt. Core 2 Duo,4GB DDR2 RAM,
320GB HD with HP Mobile remote control.
It has a 15.4" diagonal WXGA high-definition BrightView
display with 1280x800 resolution.
It has a six-cell lithium-ion battery,
a 2.00GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor,
and LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD+/-R, +/-RW drive with
double-layer support.
It has 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless
(although I have NO IDEA what that really means) - LOL
It has a built-in microphone and built-in webcam.
It has Windows Vista on it.
It has Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD,
up to 1759MB total available graphics memory. - more stuff
that I don't really understand what that really means.
It has an integrated 10/100 ethernet LAN.
It has 5-in-1 memory card reader: SD, MMC, MS, MS Pro, xD
and Four USB 2.0 ports, fourth port shared with eSATA.
(again. . . more stuff I don't understand and wish someone
could explain to me) -
It has dual headphone jacks.
It has an expressCard slot. (again. . .what??)
and when it comes to it's size,
it's closed dimensions are 14"L x 10-1/4"W x 1-1/4"H.
Now, to me. . . . again, someone who has never had one,
this sounds like a great laptop.
But you tell me.
Do you think this would be a good laptop?
For a little over $1,000. do you think this is a good buy?
I need a laptop that could replace my desktop.
I need a laptop that can do lots of graphic things at a time.
I like running lots of programs at one time.
I do photo editing and music and downloading and I want
to do it all at the same time.
And I have questions . . . .
Can you plug a laptop into the cigarette-type port in the car
(like I do my cell phone) on a trip so that you're not running
it off the battery?
How often do you have to replace a battery in a laptop?
How long does it take to recharge the battery?
Do you have to charge the battery before you use the laptop
when you first get it? (like I had to do my cell phone?)
Well,
like I said,
I want it even though I really don't know much about it.
and if anyone can help answer some questions for me
or give me advice about getting and/or using a laptop,
I'd appreciate it.
Thanks, everyone.

My laptop had a very weak battery, so I always had to have it plugged in most of the time.
You should be able to get a decent one for the price you are looking at.
you can buy separate a chord for your car charger or you can buy a transformer that plugs into your cigarette lighter and has an outlet. mine was about $35
The laptop from my old laptop lasted 3 years, my sisters lasted 1.5 years, my current one has lasted for about 1.5 so far.
If my laptop is off to go from 1% to 100% charge it is about 45 minutes I'm guessing, obviously longer if its on.
Most the time the places you buy your laptop from charges the battery before you get it.
second question/ no idea
third question/ unknown, but the HP web site should know that one
fourth question/ I would think so.
fifth question/ HP is not a top of the line brand. Ask Carol P. about her problems
Yes there are ways to power a laptop in the car/plane/train. There are special power cords with adapters for cig lighter and other DC power type connections. They can be expensive, about $100.
A different approach is a power inverter that converts DC current to AC. The inverter plugs into a cig lighter and then has regular wall socket type outlet to plug in your laptop's regular power cord. Targus (a top name in laptop accessories) makes a good unit that I have used, it cost about $35 at Staples. Advantage is you can plug in and use or charge other personal accessories like digital camera, iPod, even your cell phone.
Shop around before you buy. There are lots of good deals out there if you look around.
We leave it plugged in any time we use it. The battery only lasts for about 30 minutes when it's not plugged in. He's never replaced the battery.
I stuck with HP, as that's what I've always had and I've never had any problems with HP.......I consider it one of the top of the line.
I had it replaced and then that died after a year. I've yet to find the money to replace it:(
Batteries that come with laptops I'm told last about 1 year. The replacements are $100+
My son uses an ACER laptop and he does a lot of graphics on his. Neither my son or daughter use the battery very much. My daughter takes her laptop to school or work once in awhile and uses the battery then, but it's easier to plug it in at the library or office.
Both my kids' laptops use the 802.11 wireless and its powerful! However, some days my daughter's computer doesn't like being upstairs, and she has to bring it downstairs to get a good signal. But for the most part, they can take them just about anywhere and get a signal.
The important thing about any computer is to learn how to do simple maintenance and do it regularly, almost every day. If you do, you can prevent most problems from happening. Average lifespan in computers in our household is about 8 years! (No kidding, I haven't lost one computer yet and some are 10 years old. They just get outdated, never crash! The exception was the one that got hit by lightening).
Your hard drive sounds good at 4 Gigs. I think you could do better than 320GB DDR2 RAM. I don't know anything about Media accelerators. I would recommend going to PCWorld.com and doing a search and get information about those features to see if it's really worth paying the extra for.
Techies get really hardnosed about the brand name of chipsets, hard drives, media drives, motherboards, etc. and I'm not a techie.
Have a great gather day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for posting to sparealine.gather.com
Can you plug a laptop into the cigarette-type port in the car? Not directly no. The cord that you get with your laptop will have a regular plug on it to go into a wall outlet. If you want to have it in the car, it is possible. Just get a cigarette lighter adapter thing(that's the technical term) and plug your laptop in.
Here is the link to one:

How often do you have to replace a battery in a laptop? I had my laptop for a little over 5 years and never had to replace it. I had a Sony Vaio.
How long does it take to recharge the battery? It depends on the computer, but mine took somwhere between 30-45 mins to recharge from completely dead to fully charged.
Fo you have to charge the battery before you use the laptop when you first get it? (like I had to do mcy cell phone?) It's been so long since I've had a new laptop, I honestly don't remember. I would go with you have to plug it in and charge it when you first get the laptop though. It takes less than an hour to charge fully, so it's not that long...
really appreciate your input.
I got it from Wal-Mart.
I don't think I would pay more than $700 for the specs that you listed. But then a desktop computer would have double what a laptop does, for almost half the price and all I am used to is a desktop.
Good luck with your decision. Try some out at a store first to get a feel for them. Try going to a review site with unbiased opinions to see what people have to say about the laptop you want and others like it.
Good luck with your purchase
