Comment Replies - What's Your Preference?

Often when you get a comment there will be a question asked about the content. How do you handle these?
  • Respond on the content where the question was asked, making them have to return to see the answer
  • Respond in a ping
  • Respond in a private message
  • Respond in a comment on their content
Also, how would you prefer one to answer your questions? Which format is best?

I can never decide what format to use when replying back and I've done a mixture of all of the above... but I got thinking... what IS the preferred format?

I look back at posts where I know I asked a question because it seems like the most logical place to look for the answer.

It depends on a number of factors, but mostly what I find myself doing at the time.

I also dislike generic comments. If you don't have anything to say, don't say anything. Or is that heresy in this point-conscious atmosphere?

Sometimes I do the private message thing, but most often I answer on the article where everyone can see the answer.

I tend to go back and answer the question as a comment. I really never thought of doing it any other way.

What way seems to work best?

I think the preference is very personal, I think I expect for people to leave a comment that I could come back & read unless the post is a personal plea for help in some way then I think people would reply by a private message. Maybe because that's how I post my comments.

I was away for a while so I'm just getting used to the ping concept not sure if how often I'll use that format.

I like it when it's answered where it was asked, as I think others who come to comment will see the question and want to know the answer, too.

But if I want to make sure the person who asks the question sees the answer, I will also ping them or post the answer as a comment on one of their pages to make sure. It's easy to copy and paste it both places to be sure.

Not a bad question. I wonder what people would like. I have just always replied back in the comments, because I developed a habit of surfing through the "my comments" tab to see if anyone had answered mine from the previous day...
I have received emails though answering mine that way, but it never entered my mind that that might be a better or preferred way. I just thought it was conversation making. Hmmm....

Usually on the content where the question was asked unless I don't think there is any way they'd every come back and then I ping.
I just answer on the post/image/article.

I sometimes answer in the article. But other times I answer with a ping or a Gather mail. The thing is sometimes I go back and look at my comments and sometimes I forget to do that. So if I feel like it is very important and not just rhetorical, I will answer in a way that I feel the person will make sure to see it.

Iusually respond on the article or pic.... and then try to go to the articles of the person who posted and reciprocate....
I am pretty slow about gather.....ing....

Not really making them return ~ just keeping my mind sane. Otherwise, I'd be all over the place moreso than I already am ~ aahahha!

Lou Anne, I did change my icon. Quite by mistake, though, and I was too lazy to scroll through more than 10 pages of photos to get my fairy back, so Owl it is for now, LOL.

Rene, That was my reasoning too, but then I thought how I forget to go back to the content I asked questions at a lot and wondered if everyone else was just as forgetful, LOL
I have done both the first and the last thing mentioned.

If I ask a question, I like it when the author answers the question with a gather mail to me. I hardly have time to go check out my comments anymore!

Sometimes it depends on what the comments are. I like to respond in the OP but something personal I would rather send a PM
