PLEASE HELP! I AM TECHNICALLY CHALLENGED WHEN IT COMES TO THIS!!

I am tearing my hair out trying to figure this out!

I've been playing around with video, and when I upload the video the quality sucks!! It may be the way I am saving the file. I have a Macintosh and I am using iMovie. I go to file and then Export.

My choices are:

1. Compress movie for Web: Your movie will be compressed to 12 frames per second, approximately 320x240, with medium-quality stereo sound.Estimated size 952 KB to 1.4 MB.

 

2. Web Streaming: Your movie will be compressed to 12 frames per second, approximately 320x240, with medium-quality stereo sound. It will also have "hints" added to it to improve streaming performance. Estimated size 1.0 MB to 1.5 MB.

 

3. Full Quality: Your movie will be copied into a single movie file at full quality. Estimated size about 87.9 MB.

 

4. email: Your movie will be compressed to 10 frames per second approximately 160x120 with monaural sound. Estimated size 490 KB to 622 KB.

 

5. CD-ROM: Your movie will be compressed to 15 frames per second, approximately 320X240, with full-quality stereo sound. Estimated size 2.4 MB to 3.4 MB.

 

The sizes above are the sizes of the clip that I had open in iMovie at the time.

I've been using Compress movie for web, and I'm not happy withit at all.

 

I don't know what #2 Web Streaming is. Can someone explain this?

 

Can anyone help me with this???

I am shooting with the Canon NTSC AR45 MC DIGITAL VIDEO CAMCORDER

Nina, in the past when faced with such, I'd try each and see what I like. I'm not sure, but I think Gather video hacked the quality of whatever is posted.

Karl, good idea! I will try each one. I think gather does convert it somehow. Thanks for the info!!
I'm not familiar with Macs but I would recommend the web streaming for your video. It really all depends upon what the end purpose you have for your video. If you are burning the videos to disk for later personal viewing, then I would actually recommend the full quality. If you are posting your videos on the internet, then web streaming is ideal. If you don't like either one, I would look around on the internet for assistance with the IMovie programme or find another software programme you would like. I hope this helps. Good luck!
You also might want to check the settings on the camera you are using. You might be able to switch to a higher pixel quality. The only problem is that it will take up more space on your memory card. In this case, I would recommend using a 2 Gig memory card. It would be a worthy investment to have a couple of memory cards on hand anyways.

The video recorder that I use is digital, but with a tape.
I will have to look at the settings, but when I view in on the computer it looks better than when I upload to gather.

I can post the same video file to gather and youtube and gather's copy will be crappy. Youtube looks the way it was intended.

I have heard from others on here that its the gather site that wrecks the quality. BUT-I don't know much about it sorry. Seems like you've already compressed it which should help. BTW-I like you're videos and think they look great!

sorry i dont have much of c clue on it I just post most of them as they come out of the camera but when i do make them the quality seams crapy here on gather no matter what I do.

I don't have a MAC so everything I would tell ya to do won't work. I use Windows Movie Maker. Sometimes when mine converts to Gather the quality is not nearly as good.

I was a TV engineer for 17 years. NTSC is 30 frames per second with 525 horizontal lines. This is standard US television. Gather degrades your picture. If Gather left it alone, streaming would be good. But, because it's their bandwidth and not yours, I'd leave it at either full quality or CD quality.

Hi Ed, I have another editing program called Final Cut Express, but it would take me forever to figure it out! The problem is trying to find a program that is easy and will work on a Macintosh!

Oh Nina ~ don't give up. I looked at one of your videos with the birds, and the quality is not too bad. I haven't work on a MAC in so long! I'm still trying to get with LINUX, and I've made a major accomplishment just trying to do the LINKS on Gather. ~ lol

I upload videos in my other communities outside of Gather with no problem, but I haven't tried to upload Videos here, I just watch everyone else's.

Let us know how you are coming along tomorrow.

Nina, if you have Quicktime Pro, be sure to get the Flip4Mac program to go with it - it allows Quicktime to play and convert to WindowsMedia .wma files. I've been doing that with my slideshows because the .mov files keep being over Gather's 100mb limit, whereas converting them to .wma shrinks 'em down to about 25mb, and still preserves the original quality.

And speaking of quality, mostly that's Gather's fault - I upload slideshows with clean, crisp photos in the slideshows and beautiful soundtracks, but what ends up on Gather are fuzzy shots and music that wavers and often has dropouts. Grrrr.....
