Can You See What I See?

My husband and I went to the store tonight and when we came out I noticed a gorgeous full moon with a really bright star underneath it. I had never seen this before so I decided I would come home and try to get some pictures for everyone to see.

By the way, when we came out of the store, this "star" was directly below the moon.

As I was downloading the pictures from my camera to my computer I thought I would look up on some astronomy sites and see what the heck that bright star was. I had no idea, but that is Mars!!! That little speck just to the right of the moon!!!

This is just really awesome! I apologize for some of the pictures being so bright. The moon was very bright tonight and we didn't have any clouds to tone down the brightness.

I got cold outside so I decided to come in for a while and let the moon rise a little more. When I tried again Mars was a little higher up.

When I got a good zoom on the moon, Mars just disappeared. I think the moon is just too bright. You can just barely see it to the right.

Anyway, I thought this was really cool and thought I would share it with all of you. You are supposed to be able to see it again tomorrow night as well. If anyone takes pictures, please, send me links so that I can see too.

So cool! I have a book that I bought to identify the lights in the sky. National Audubon Society Field Guide to the Night Sky. There are charts for each region of the U.S. during all four seasons. It's a cool book, but I haven't used it to it's fullest potential yet. I can't see the moon tonight, at least now, but I'll look around for it in a bit. It's 19 degrees tonight, with 30-40 MPH winds and lite flurries, I think the cloudy sky should clear soon.

WOW, awsome pictures Toni. Don't cha just love the moon when it's so big and beautiful. I tried to get a pick the other day but the street was to bright. Again, just beautiful, thank you. And yes I knew it was Mars, I live with a man who has an unusual amount of incidental data stored in his brain. EEEkkkk! But very handy when playing games.
Fantastic pictures Toni. Thanks for sharing them. I think hubby said Mars was in a close orbit right now, closest to Earth a few nights ago.

I meant to type "star". Was it a little bit red? When I've seen Mars in the sky, it's actually been a little bit red.

Excellent photos!! I love to watch the moon when it's in my vicinity. I love to moonrise when it looks so close to us. These are wonderful to the eyes.

Hi Jean, I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 with 12X Optical Zoom. It's really an awesome camera and I'm very pleased with it. My mom, Tanya P, just got one and is learning how to use it.
