You get pregnant. Nine(ten) months later you have a beautiful baby. You prepare for the ocassion by taking classes, reading books, watching shows, DVDs, videos, etc. But nothing, and I mean nothing can prepare you for breastfeeding.
As a new mother, this was the only thing that I was not ready for. Talk about an experience. I remember the first week that we tried my son didn't latch on properly and I was not producing enough milk (still have that problem).
The feeling of frustation was overwhelming. All you hear is: "breastmilk is the best milk" but no one prepares you for the actual act. It took me quite sometime to actually figure out the way to do this. I kept trying and after a month and a half I was successful. He latches on quickly and enjoys the milk. I am still not producing enough milk and I supplement with formula but at least he is getting something.
What I don't understand is why as women, moms-to-be we don't talk about it often. I am not sure if is society that doesn't allow us to do it (I have gotten a couple of bad looks while breastfeeding in public) or is it that we are losing interest on the most natural way for a mom to connect with her baby.
One thing is for sure; I will continue to breastfeed until I can, eventhough I still don't produce enough milk(no matter what I try) and I encourage you to do so.
