New Ohio 'Abortion Ban' Bill Also Bans...

State Government Rep. Tom Brinkman (R-Cincinnati) introduced a bill in the Ohio House which would criminalize an abortion procedure by declaring it a second degree felony for the first offense and a first degree felony on the second.

The bill would also ban the dispensing of RU-486 (mifepristone). - Sec. 2919.123. (A).

Brinkman introduced a similar bill in Ohio's previous legislative session which died in committee.

The new bill has one cosponsor; freshamn Representative John Adams (R-Sidney).

Brinkman is a fourth term Republican office holder for Ohio's 34th District. He has established himself as a fiscal conservative watchdog.

I live in Ohio and I hadn't heard about this one. This should be an interesting debate. Strickland got a lot of votes from the religious. It could get very messy for him if this makes his desk.

Shelley - In a couple of the linked articles above, Strickland is quoted as stating that he will veto any abortion ban bill that makes his desk.

I suspect he will hold to his word. His 'religous' supporters come from the vast swath of moderate Christians in Ohio; and the general belief there is that, although abortion's are disturbing procedures, they need to be kept legal so that they can be regulated.

Strickland is pro-choice. I worked as a volunteer for his campaign. He is a good man who lives in the real world and puts his money where is mouth is. This bill has a snow balls chance in hell in passing. This guy does this stuff pro jorma.

Sharon - I lived in a Strickland District in the 1990s. I was very impressed with his statesmanship skills. He seems to have the genuine demeanor of a dedicated public servant. I was both happy and relieved when he won the Governorship.

I was never impressed with Strickland. It's funny because my mom met this guy and she loved him. She works for head start. He was going on about he was gonna make Head Start so great. Guess what, he's actually supporting putting preschool into the schools which puts family advocates like my mother out of a job. She isn't pleased.

I just can't stand the guy. The whole anti school choice thing annoys me. I didn't like what the republicans were offering either.

I admire that they keep trying, but I think they'll lose this one like all of the others. I don't like abortion but I think all this effort would be better spent helping to foster social conditionst that would reduce the number of people seeking abortions. I think they'd save a lot more babies a lot sooner that way than the way they've been going about it.
