TOTN is quite a good show. It tends to get more blue-collar folks calling in than some of the other NPR shows. That can be good and bad. I'm sure we'll hear a variety of opinions from the callers.

These 'symbols' get borrowed and misused and abused, don't they? One of the ancient symbols was plagiarized by the Nazis of WWII. I would say that a noose would be a very offensive symbol to anyone with any sensitivity. I also get sick of people suggesting we 'ignore' the bad guys so we don't 'inflame' the situation. Okay, so today I am a bit cranky. I'll have to give that spot a listen before I make up my mind completely.

But making such things into a big publicity matter, just gives the idiots who planted it the fifteen minutes of anonymous fame they craved and may encourage other idiots who may or may not wish to remain anonymous to do something more harmful. It makes sense to make the proper authorities aware of such incidents, but beyond that it is six of one and half a dozen of the other as to whether the publicity encourages or discourages more and perhaps more harmful displays of bigotry.

but, Carol, if you alert the authorities it becomes public knowledge and very easily gets into the media. If you are really trying to deny people their spotlight, then you have to leave the incident unreported and there is no way someone should do that. A noose is not merely a symbol. Its also used to kill people. Having one put on your door could be a hideously misguided prank or an indication that someone plans to attack yo and your family.

Right on Carol! When I was in high school, the swastika was all the rage with malcontents and "idiots". Ignoring such behavior, like a child's tantrum, is the best way of handling this nonsense.

The simple answer is NO, that is not the best response. There is no justification whatsoever for such behavior, and no one in their right mind should ignore such lethal hate.

Trust me, very few people would ignore a death threat, white, black, red, purple or polka dot.

I actually saw an interview with some Rap singer last night, he said that to him the noose has many meanings but the first thing to pop into his head is the Wild West and cowboys. He also suggested that we give a symbol like this too much power. I was surprised at his thoughts, but refreshingly. I don't think it should be ignored but all the attention given to these things by the media just brings more of these idiots out of the woodwork IMO.
