Psychologist Madeline Levine has been counseling troubled teens for 25 years. Her book "The Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure and Material Advantage are Creating a Generation of Disconnected and Unhappy Kids," gathers her experience and shows how families can address the problems of their teenagers.

No question about it. I was told years ago that hard times build character. If we never fail, never suffer the consequences of our actions and never have to work for anything, how will we ever learn the value of perseverance, overcoming and done the self-esteem building feeling of satisfaction of goals met and well done jobs? I have to tussle with my kids over this constantly regarding all of the kids they go to school with who have what they perceive as "life handed to them." Thank you for this article!

I have my identity because of the financial struggles I have been through. There is a lot to building character and I can see how privilege would disconnect these young people.
