I actually do know the identity of this "mystery plant", but thought it would be fun to challenge the other gardeners on Gather. I've attached two pre-bloom photos for your viewing pleasure, and I will give a few hints:
- It's a reseeding annual in Minnesota
- It's consistently one of the tallest plants in my garden
- It's an old-fashioned cottage garden favorite
- It's won't be found in your average garden-variety [nudge] nursery
Gimme your educated (or not so much) guesses, and I'll post the answer in a couple of days.
The person who makes the first correct guess wins an avacado-flavored fruit roll-up, and the person who makes the second correct guess gets to weed my gardens!

(imagine the voice of cletus from the simpsons) hey, maw! what's this dang plant auntie gots posted?
BTW, I love that name "Kiss me over the garden gate" - never heard it before.
btw, i saw the most fun plant - wild rumpus juncus. do you have one? i want one for next year!
But I just pull out the unwanted seedlings and let a few well placed plants grow. Mine grow to 8 feet or so but it's a beautiful thing to see in the late summer/early fall.
I'd love to be able to grow something other than oleanders and azaleas.
Auntie, I want some seeds! Pleeeeze? Don't forget, I want some of your hollyhocks, too!! I'll gladly give you some of my malva sylvestris or some other trade.
